Peter Michael Mon Plaisir '02..at the Denver DTC....$48 at J Alexander's!?

I wasn’t sure where this should be posted so I hope this is the right place here at WB. While in Denver on business, I joined a friend and his wife for dinner at J. Alexander’s, an upscale chain with locations around the country. I’ve dined here several times and it is certainly a good “go-to” place in the DTC area south of Denver; though not where you’d go to “wow” clients. It has a pretty decent wine list that is not too pricey. I noticed, for instance, that Orin Swift’s The Prisoner was $42 (on the “reserve” list!) and I’d seen it at retail in Denver earlier that day for $34!

As I looked over the list and mentioned a couple of Chardonnays, the server mentioned that a special tonight was a 2002 Peter Michael Mon Plaisir for…$48. Though skeptical of provenance, etc., we ordered it and was incredible. Though probably near the end of its run, it was drinking beautifully this evening. A nice surprise at a place where we expected nothing even close to that quality, regardless of price. Apparently the GM there knows a little about wine (I guess!) and passes along these unpublished, unadvertised gems often.

Just thought I’d pass it along for those of you in that region and fellow road warriors! Next time I think I’ll call ahead to see what’s being offered when I’m in town.

I often eat at J Alexander’s in Kansas City, not for the wine list, but because their BYO policy is excellent. Officially I think it’s $10 corkage, but I’ve rarely been charged anything.

Oh and the food is pretty good too.
