Pessac/Graves

The 2010 Baret [Pessac Leognan] is drinking well today too! Classic red Graves notes like earth, scorch, stone, cigar box, on a medium body, balanced acid, red fruited palate. The finish and depth are longer than one would expect. This bottle was direct imported via Rimmerman, and the back label is in French, but is fairly obvious e.g. 53M, 41CS, 6CF, with 14% abv. The edges are starting to turn orange, which is not obvious from the picture, but it improves with aeration, so I’d expect it still has lots of runway ahead. This is a good example of how fruit can richen as it blossoms; initially it was tight and austere then as the bottle, and my mood, warmed up it improved in glass.

For those who love Pessac, and are not sitting on cases of classifieds 1989 or 1998s, give this a try. It can be a little hard to find, as it’s a Parisian sommelier insider selection, but current release Barets are better imported/distributed, and showing up on retail shelves. I would give it a B+ on my ratings sheet, noting that it’s a style that better enjoyed by itself, than compared. And, as Michael notes, the style has not turned ‘modern’.

PS: my non wine consuming sibling loved this
