Tonight’s supper was a straight Penne with Puttanesca Sauce. We finished the jar of Rao’s Puttenesca Sauce with added garlic, capers, anchovies, and Cerignola olives. The rich sauce was very good on Rustichella di Abruzzo Penne. It was also good w]th a 2000 Luna ‘Amici’ ( a 50/50 blend of Syrah and Sangiovese); much better than the last time we had it - dark ruby-garnet in color, with a thin light edge; rich dark fruit in nose and flavors; mid-palate of dark fruit and a lot less tannins than last time with adequate acidity; and a medium, slightly oaky fruit finish. It was ok with the Puttanesca but I’d probably rather have a straight Sangiovese.
Then for dessert we had two Ghiradelli Chocolate bars - milk chocolate for Carollee and 100% cocoa dark chocolate for me, These we enjoyed with a 1999 Granite Springs El Dorado Black Muscat - rich dark fruit (with none of the heavy sweet fruit of the last bottle); very good with the chocolates. It was a nice finish to the evening.
