Pegau 2006 -- buy or pass?

Domaine Pegau Chateauneuf Du Pape Rouge 2006

Any strong opinions?

$50?

Daniel, it’s the “consolation prize” on Cinderellawine, so it’s a bit less than $50.

I’ve got some Pegau in the cellar, I know it’s good stuff in general. Some of the reviews I have seen seem to be for the Cuvee or the Laurence, I am just wondering if I’ll be happy to have the “tout court” stuff in my cellar.

you ordered some of the 05 Patrick Lesec Bargeton, got a confirmation and they were out?

If they are offering it at the same 39.99 price, then that is a steal!

$42. Still a steal I suppose. Yeah, I ordered just about exactly at 20 minutes past, after calling my neighbor to get him to go in with me. And the order appeared to go through. Then today, it turns out it didn’t. I was getting excited about the Lesec. The Pegau is more old hat for me.

Yes please. I haven’t had it as I am currently on my 04s but I’m a buyer of this wine every vintage until they price themselves out of what I would pay for them like a few ego’s cough Clos des Papes cough have done recently.

Better off with the Pegau

OK, guys, thanks for the advice. I suppose I am in, with or without my neighbor.

I was a schmuck and bought the Berserker Exclusive at $50 for both the aforementioned wines…

Do you like Parker-ized wines?

Do you like oak?

[There’s nothing wrong with that if you do, I’m just wondering.]

you can’t seriously be implying that Pegau is such a wine? if you are, then we simply disagree on that matter.

I actually prefer some of the less hallowed vintages of Chateauneuf du Pape (e.g. '99, '04 '06) as they are more readily drinkable. At my age I am not as patient as I once was.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the couple ‘06’s I’ve had.

Recently had the 04 Pegau and loved it.

Do you prep your palate before you taste? [With stainless-steel champagne/prosecco/riesling etc?]

usually sparkling mineral water. there’s certainly some out there who dislike oak in much smaller quantities than I, so I am willing to own that. the Pegau’s I’ve had just never struck me as being “oaky.”

No new oak used for Pegau. I don’t know if you’ve tasted Pegau, but Pegau does not taste oaky (aside from Cuvee Laurence from time to time even though that sees no new oak either).

$50 is a good price, I’ve never seen any vintage of Pegau for $42.

I’m surprised by the oaky/parkerized comment. There is a lot going on in Pegau, including brett that has been way too much for me to deal with in a couple 99s.
But never oaky or ‘parkerized’ - though Parker has certainly lauded this producer.

Way better off with the Pegau. $50 is a decent price. I bought a case at $45 per.

At least I won’t have a problem deciding about tonight’s “flashy” $20 chardonnay…
