I’ve always liked Pinot Blanc, now I’m beginning to love it, picking random bottles off of shelves and almost always finding something to like, in this pairing, one to love.
2024 Tiefenbrunner ‘Merus’ Weissburgunder Pinot Blanc Alto Adige - The first thing I noticed is that the name of the grape is presented in two languages, neither of which happens to be the language of the country where this was grown!?! Light gold color, aromas are pleasant with note of both gala apple and bartlett pear. The palate is moderately rich and a little softer than expected, although there is some almost tannic roughness towards the finish, which smooths out after a few sips. There are herbal tinges to the flavors, but this comes across as fairly simple and straightforward. A pleasant but not distinctive wine that is probably fully mature. Rated 86.5
2024 Uait Pinot Bianco Ca di Sopra Ravenna - The color is paler, with almost a green tinge. The aromas are very vivid, offering pretty white peachy fruit, cactus flower, a touch of hay and ground coriander. The palate is both delicate and solid, with surprising intensity. The flavors mimic the aromas, blend beautifully into something very intricate. This is both piquant and transparent. A truly excellent wine that in style somehow reminds me of Riesling! I didn’t notice the alcohol level and don’t have the bottle, but I’d guess ~12%. Rated 93, no idea if it will improve but it’s so good now.
