Paul Hobbs Fall Offering

Today is the first day to place an order for their Fall offering but the tariff is stiff and I am kind of on the fence. There are so many others out there that are less expensive but just as tasty. Anyone ordering or contemplating on placing an order with this winery?

Delete Button.

That kinda says it all.

Paul got a big head when he first got some good RP scores. Prices went up anywhere from 50% for the basic wines to 200 even 300% for the high end wines, and he bragged about it to the NYT. Now I just shake my head when I see the stuff. No doubt the wines are nice, but again I look at your second sentence.

In defense of the BTK bottling, I think he is contractually bound to charge that amount base on the per ton price he pays to Andy. It is however, too expensive for me these days.

When a lot of other wineries are offering case discounts, free shipping, etc. to help out their customers and move their wines in the process, it is hard to justify paying full tariff in this economy. I like their wines but not this year.

Bill:

It is the other way around. Andy sets the price of the grapes based on the retail price of the wine.

Paul Hobbs lost me years ago. Especially since retail prices are usually way below list prices.

I haven’t purchased a bottle of Hobbs for at least 7 years, but I keep getting the mailer. I agree with Bill: Delete button.

what are his prices at now? i am not a fan of his wines, but am curious what the tariff is.

I think the To Kalon and Beckstoffer are around $250-$275. Some of the other single vineyard cabs $200. I can get a case of Sierra Carche for that! (not sure I spelled that right)

Just some of the Fall offerings:

2007 Chardonay Walker Station RRV - $75

2007 Cuvee Agustina Lindsay Estate PN - $125

2006 CS Stagecoach - $165

2006 CS Beckstoffer to Kalon - $275

Seriously…let’s say he can’t move this stuff…let’s say he decides he won’t opt for Costco…where does a very high end winery go to dump his product???

Sure, it’s a once-in-a-hundred-years situation, but where does his current offering go next year?

Stu:

It is my impression that Paul Hobbs business model has been to offer the wine to its mailing list first and after the mailing list offer deadline anything that has not been sold gets offered to restaurants and stores. That way he gets as much as he can via direct offer instead of selling it through the three tier system where he has to sell it for a lower profit. Most of his wines have relatively small productions so I do not think he is in that much trouble to sell out his wines. As long as he gets the points there will be people buying his wines.

Regarding where does a high end winery go to dump his product, there is always winestilsoldout.com and similiar outfits to offload your wine without hurting your name.

I had a really nice Hobbs made Cab called Fairchild a couple of weeks back. Around $110 I think. Fruit from near Kuleto above Prichard Hill and also some blended in from a Beckstoffer vineyard in Rutherford. Still in the 3-digit range but a very good wine with the tell-tale PH style at a lower price.

Easy pass for me…prices very high, even the Syrah at $70 per bottle. Best of luck to PH and the the gang.

I’ve been passing on Paul Hobbs for several years as well. $165 for the Stagecoach? Wasn’t that just $75 or so just a few years ago?!? And the Beckstoffer To Kalon is just crazy. I’ll take a bottle of Realm for less than half the price, thank you.
