Pali Appellation wines - 2008 are $19 which include shipping

Just got email from Pali.
They are offering 4 appellation wines for $19 which will include shipping.
They will still have some vineyard designates a higher pricing — but these seem like a good value.

Anyone try them? Any comments?

I asked the same question in another thread over on another board.
Same outpouring of responses. neener

I suspect few people have tasted them. These are 2008s, they were on the vine 12 months ago and they can’t have been bottled very long ago. Barrel samples are always a fairly incomplete representation of a finished wine, but it’s especially difficult to taste an appellation wine before it’s blended in the tank unless you take part in their blending trials. They are certainly priced very competitively because they use a lot of juice that normally would have gone into their svd wines.

I guess big yawn for Pali - or not much interest in “bargain” wines.
millions of comments for Rhys, Rivers-Marie, Saxum, etc.

Maybe Tim Perr should have had them at $50 but reduced them to $20 if you purchased a case. Oh well, they will probably show up as a Chairmans Selection here in PA.

Just looked “over there” and saw Tim’s response.

Once they’re in the hands of consumers, I’m sure you’ll start seeing notes and I suspect there will be lots of fans.

LA Times recently wrote up their 07 app wines and liked them very much . . .

My guess is that they will be above average wines for a great price . . . you really cannot be the price, especially with freight included . . .

I believe that Brian was not involved with this vintage at all . . . but I could be wrong . . .

Cheers!

Thanks for the comments. It’s tough to sell wine out there no doubt (except if you’re Rhys or Rivers Marie apparently). Kenneth was the consulting winemaker on all of our 2008’s including these appellation blends. There will only be a microscopic amount of 2008 vineyard designates coming out in early 2009, with the remainder of the wine going into these blends at $19 per bottle.

Tim, what’s the reasoning behind this decision (I can guess)?

FWIW, I tasted my first '08 samples from the Willamette Valley recently. If they’re any indication, the vintage will live up to its early reputation and the Pali wine from Momtazi and Shea fruit (I’m assuming one of the appellation wines is a WV blend) should be a spectacular deal for $19. I have multiple options available to me in the under-$25 price range that I can source locally, so there’s not much incentive for me to buy Pali.

None of those will be as good as our Alphabets, I promise. neener

I don’t know about that, Tim. Shall I name names? [stirthepothal.gif]
