Paging Gerhard: Pronouncing Veltliner

I´ll think about it.
Actually everything that came to my mind so far - like Viktor, Vatikan, Veto, Variable, Vanille, Vera … seems to confirm your theory. [wow.gif]

der Verein, vielleicht?

German word, I’d say…

I used to think it odd when reading Herman Hesse’s Unterm Rad and Peter Camenzind that folks were drinking a red wine called Veltliner—then Pronay pointed out to me the Valtelina connexion…

After reading this whole thread, I think next time I’ll order Riesling.

Another fun white wine pronunciation is Steen, which is the South African name for Chenin Blanc. A South African friend explained that it’s pronounced STEE-en, like rhyming with Ian.

And me with a trip to Vienna (and hopefully dinner with Gerhard) in Dec.

Thank you to all contributors on this thread. Love it!

Mike,
you´re welcome … and I still have reserved the 21st in my calendar!

Cheers
Gerhard

Excellent Gerhard, I have that down as well. I am waiting for the train schedule to be load for beyond 12/13 and then I will book that and confirm times. Looking forward to it.

You’re going to attempt to travel from Tokyo to Vienna and back in December?

You might want to invest in some hazmat suits.

Or your own personal 737.

Um, color me confused. Care to elaborate?

Even transiting FRA outbound and ICN returning.

What am I missing?
