It’s shipping season, which means it’s time to take things out of bulky shippers and put them into my Domaine or Uline six-paks, write stuff on three sides of them and then cram them into my increasingly unhinged-looking storage unit. The Uline upright six paks are terrible (I seem to have gotten a batch that were cut and assembled without proper prefolding to the flaps), but the Domaine lies-flats are pretty good. My problem is packing tape. I have gotten different kinds of Scotch 3M tape from Staples, Office Depot and various UPS stores which all promise to be heavy-duty, unstoppable, long lasting, commercial grade, box locking, will never fall off, hold up to 80 lbs - and sometimes that’s true and sometimes I’ll come back a week or a year later and it will be curling off.
Does anyone have a recommendation for what tape actually sticks to boxes? I’ve had better luck - sometimes - with the type that has fibers running through it (not sure what that’s called) but I don’t know if that’s the best.
Not sure if anything is perfect, but I’ve had pretty good luck with 3" tape (shipping/carton tape). If your storage is humidity is high, you might want to look into plastic bins. Good luck!
I used gorilla “heavy duty” packing tape for a cross-country move of my wine last year, it worked out pretty well. However, I used the 3" wide version, which doesn’t seem to be available for sale anymore. The 2" that you can find online now is probably just fine, if a bit less ideal.
Can’t say I have a brand in mind. My experience has more so been in receiving packages that have used this tape and it’s super strong and hard to remove without a very sharp box cutter, unlike conventional tape that peels and cuts easily.
Wine Consigners comes to mind as a retailer that uses this type of tape.
