I want to make extra items to sell in our wine shop. I have a list most of which are homemade items related to wine, but have some problems related to recipes or how to make them.
Jelly’s made from wine grapes - Pectin like certo is not available in Spain, only the pure pharmaceutical grade. I have made it in the form of hocky pucks to syrup, all delicious, but does any one have ideas on making jelly from Cab Sauv, grapes, etc? I need to do it in large batches as harvest is intense.
Aromatherapy / Antioxident face creams, hand soaps, lotions, oils.
Winery Cookbook, I have this almost ready to start taking photos.
Winery Postcards, should not be too difficult.
Any other ideas for my shop in Spain?
Verjus as an alternative to vinegar for salads?
A regular bottle in Sonoma was priced @ $13; I declined…
Nola…I thought those sardines you brought to Chicago were great…Scott Manlin and I were eating those suckers like popcorn!
Don’t make em, but various olive oils and balsamic vinegars are a nice touch.

Honey
PPPP (Premium Preserved Pork Products)
Mustard with wine in it
Mostardo (italian chutney like thing made by adding a commited dose of yellow hot Chinese mustard to fruit in fairly thick syrup. You put it on roast pork)
Mosto Cotto (grape juice boiled down till it is thick and sweet, you put it on cheese or, if you are a sick puppy like me, on spicy fried chicken).
If you sell anything other than wine, Liquor, STILL water, ice, and mixers with the 1% alcohol added (TO MAKE THEM LEGAL TO SELL IN A “WINE & LIQUOR STORE” in NY), as well as CERTAIN accessories such as wine openers & glasses (BUT NOT DECANTERS, GIFT BAGS OR RECYCLABLE WINE CARRIERS or anything else on the NYSLA “Verboten” list), you will be cited and fined by the State Liquor Authority.
Some of the basic pointers from the SLA website:
Know the Terms of Your License http://www.abc.state.ny.us/handbook-for-retail-licenses
OFF PREMISES (L, A/DS, AX/DX LICENSES)
Licenses for the off premises consumption of alcoholic beverages as described below:
L = Liquor store license which permits sale of liquor and wine for off premises consumption.
A/DS = Grocery store/drug store license which permits sale of beer for off premises consumption.
AX/DX = Grocery store/drug store license which permits sale of beer and wine coolers for off premises consumption.
- Alcoholic beverages are sold “to go.” They cannot be consumed in your establishment.
- Open containers of any alcoholic beverages are not permitted in your store.
- You must purchase strictly from a licensed wholesale dealer.
- You cannot buy from or sell alcoholic beverages to another retailer.
- Beer cannot be sold in a liquor store.
- Liquor and wine cannot be sold in grocery stores.
- Sales can only be made to consumers for their consumption, not for resale.
- Sales cannot be made “on house credit.” However, credit cards may be used.
“In 1934, after the prohibition against the sale and distribution of alcoholic beverages was repealed by the 21st Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1933, the New York State Legislature enacted the Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) Law which created the State Liquor Authority and the Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control. The Authority is comprised of three Members appointed by the Governor with the advice and consent of the State Senate. The restrictions, regulations and provisions contained in the ABC Law as enacted in 1934 were designed to protect the health, safety and welfare of the people of New York State and to promote temperance and respect for the law. Those considerations continue to play an important role in the Authority’s decisions today.”
Sorry for the thread drift, but this is pretty aggravating for a guy who HAS to close at 7pm Monday-Saturday (but NOT Sunday!!!) because some 1934 law is still on the books…Cheese? Crackers? A pic-a-nic basket? Nein!!!
Brent, I feel your pain but I think Nola is talking about things she would actually MAKE and sell in HER shop at HER winery in Spain, no?
“mixers with the 1% alcohol added (TO MAKE THEM LEGAL TO SELL IN A “WINE & LIQUOR STORE” in NY)”
You are F-ing KIDDING me?!?!? So, Rose’s Lime Juice and Tonic Water and Bloody Mary Mix have 1% alcohol in them?
Brent,
That is lame. Move back to Boston.
