Yup— Björnson Vineyard, Eola-Amity Hills was right at the beginning of 50% flower in time for Monday’s rain (June 8)
I’m excited, this has actually been a pretty cool growing season since the flowers came out, notwithstanding the last 2 days. Today was supposed to be hot but a thundershower rolled in and we’re a little muggy but not that hot. Back to low 80s for the next 10 days, nights in the 53-55F.
It’s been solidly windy just about every afternoon this summer. As I said, I’m psyched for what I see.
I was not excited to land at PDX on Tuesday when it was 102 and had to get into my black car…
Things are looking really good out there for now. The powdery pressure is through the roof though. The risk index models seems like it will just be pegged at 100 for the foreseeable future. Temps for the next two weeks look quite pleasant. Maybe not quite as nice as August 2024, but not too shabby!
Nights are cool and wind is good (depending upon the site of course). The upcoming string of 80-85 F will mean that the pressure is pegged for awhile, but it’s nice to not be rushing headlong towards harvest for a change. It’s been a low pressure year until now, but being on guard is the name of the game.
We haven’t seen any color change at all, so we’re focused on getting past veraison and keeping things tight.
I know Europe has been getting pounded with heat, and I hope things ease up over there. But I will be really happy if this cooler weather continues.
Just saw Vincent post on instagram that first blush in armstrong just happened as well. I assume Eola is behind? Puts harvest towards early september?
We haven’t seen any sign yet at Whistling Ridge (@Jim_Anderson must just be channeling Santa Barbara
)
My bud break prediction was September 1st, but we’re moving that back a bit.
Just checking in, hows everyone holding up? Does the near term forecast pose any problems?
Was wondering how things were looking as well. Pretty heavy smoke in the forecast for this week.
Over 2 million acres have burned in 2026 in Oregon so far, which is a new yearly record. It is only the first week of August and peak fire season doesn’t start until September…
Well it’s several orders of magnitude less than the 2020 smoke (hovering at 150 to 160 PM2.5 per fire.airnow.gov air monitors, which by the way are at lower elevations). We were in the 400 to 600 range for a full week in 2020 as I recall. Here’s a picture from Björnson Vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA taken this Sunday. Lag phase and signs of millerandage (hens and chicks) due to the rain at flowering that first week of June (8th)… At any rate, I would think that the grapes at this early stage are less vulnerable to (low level) smoke?
Damn. Air smells burnt up here but aqi and haze is relatively light.
AQI at my home in Banks has been ranging between 140-175ish (I have a purple air sensor) , surprisingly not as bad as visuals would lead one to believe.
