It would be VERY interesting to be able to track sales of that before and after the appearance here. I have always said that if either Oprah or Martha Stewart every started touting wines it would make Robert Parker look like Robert Balzer…
Want the icing on the cake? Dr. Vino is the one writing up the wines.
BTW, $40 for 4 bottles equivalent of "The Tank Vin Rouge CdR??? Ummmmm, not exactly cheap-ass territory…and it’s a Jenny & Francois selection. Last time I had one of their wines I "Fu"ed it…right down the drain.
J&F are much beloved by those into “natural wine.” I have a friend who works part time as a rep for them, and I’ve tried lots of their wines. Some I’ve quite liked, others were ok, a few I thought indeed dreadful (a Domaine de l’Anglore Tavel rose!)… But it looks like that CdR is from the Estezargues co-op, which generally is pretty decent for the level (d’Andezon is one of their brands). The 3L is $36 at Astor, probably not a bad deal for someone who wanted a glass a day, as BiB format would keep fresher than 4 bottles.
That’s actually a pretty nice list of wines! I mean, getting people to drink the always lovely Dry Creek Chenin Blanc and a decent Cab-temp blend, they could have done much worse.
Ah, the Cousin Anjou. I have had the '06 three times. Twice distinct brett, but within my tolerance level, with high acids- but I like high acids. B/B- on my easy scale, but not something I’d look for. The third bottle was more as you describe- off aromas, not pleasant, and absolutely shrill acids (how did the bacteria live in those acids?). Not drinkable. I like the IDEA of low sulphur, but the execution too often ends up with something Coturri-esque.
2004 Olivier Cousin Anjou Pur Breton- France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Anjou (4/23/2008)
Dirty, vile stench of merde on the nose. Less offensive in mouth…but who wants to drink something that is so obviously flawed. Must be the bacterias! Organic winemaking gone wrong. NR (flawed)
I note that was an '04 consumed last year. Even with a store that tries for good storage, I’m generally happier with the latest possible vintage of those low sulphur wines, though I do know some people cellar. To me it just ups the chances of something going wrong.
Glad you noticed the story. Since that issue went to print, there’s a new editor-in-chief at O. Maybe she’s into wine?
Since this is my first ever post on wine berserkers, let me take a second to remark on the astounding number of blinking, flashing and even sado-masochistic emoticons there are on the left of this message box!
You better post frequently, as beyond those you see on the left, if you were to click ‘view more smilies’, you’d have even MORE from which to choose! That said, we expect you to post daily, with different emoticons each time.
