Opinions on torn labels? How much of an impact?

Intimidated? Really?

Nah- just trying to show some respect for you at the same time I show disrespect. It’s a lawyer thing.

BTW- you’re slipping. The phonix thing was funny, but I fully expected a “Simple Jack” reference. It would have at least ma ma ma made me happy.

I feel great shame. I sit in box.

In my composite scoring, I award 10 points for label. 9 for it being there + 1 for the artwork. I never score tears in the label - too dark where I taste to see any rips or tears.

It depends on the way you attempt to “move” it. If you sell it yourself I doubt it will cause a reduction in value. If you sell it through any intermediary, like an auction house (with a retail presence) or simply a retailer, they may, perhaps, list it as such:

X Wine $XXX.00 (Torn label) or (Slight label conditions)

Someone like Jordan or Tyler, buying this to flip, might not be interested. Someone buying this to drink might see this as an opportunity to get something for a few bucks off.

Sell it yourself.

A label is a label. Isn’t it what is inside the bottle that counts?

I thought you’d get the answer by now Chris - sorry -

There are mitigating factors - of course a torn label brings down the value - and the more expensive the wine - the more a factor it becomes.

It’s not that big of a deal on current vintage wines under $50 because you are usually only getting your money back and the younger the wine, the less the buyer has to worry about provenance -

The most important thing about older wines is the fill and the shape of the cork and cap. Collectors will put up with torn/worn labels if the wine and bottle are in very good shape. When you are talking about real rarities (1900 Margaux, '47 Cheval Blanc for instance) a perfect label with all the other factors positive will of course bring the best price -

The biggest thing if you are selling wines with torn labels is to provide pictures and to slightly overstate the condition of the label - then you won’t have a problem if the sale is made. Even if you are selling a group of wines, make sure you state label condition on each bottle - especially if you are dealing with wine geeks - collectors who actually drink the wines are much easier to deal with and truly only care about provenance -

This is a bottle of Cayuse that is under ten years old, even if someone held you up about it, what are they going to ask you to drop from the price? $5?

Maybe if they were collectable labels like SQN, but that’s about it. If you do sell it, do me a favor, don’t disclose the tear so I can see if a thread shows up called “Should I be Upset About This?”.

It doesn’t really matter to me.

Chris,

Perhaps I wasn’t clear. I don’t think it will matter to anyone since it’s not a collectible… or rather since the BOTTLE isn’t considered collectable. It’s about a $200 bottle and I can’t imagine anyone caring much unless you really ripped the hell out of the label.

By the way I had to stop myself from posting something really in your face after reading your reply to Joe. I skipped over the ‘trying to move’ phrase as did others - and if several of us did you might want to consider that you weren’t real clear about what you were asking. It’s pretty poor form to ask people for opinions then get pissy when they want some clarification. If you can’t deal with a simple thing like that, don’t ask.

By the way, I saw the post you put up briefly earlier, and talk about “pissy!” There were quite a few pretty ridiculous “eff you” style statements in there to both myself, and somebody else, and I was more or less in response mode when I saw that you thought better of yourself. So while I suppose taking it down was a good call, it was sort of strange that a thread like this could make you so “in your face!”

You’ll have to excuse me, I’m getting reaccustomed to internet message boards. While I tapped back in because I’ve been in the mood to chat wine here recently, I’m remembering more or less why I tapped out awhile back. Its a land where people go from “normal” to “enraged” in seemingly one second flat, and where people check normal interpersonal etiquette at their keyboard. For the life of me I can’t figure out why so many people say things to others on the internet, that they’d never say to another person in person. Guess it comes with the anonymity.

P.S. Since I did have the privilege of reading your delightful post, and saw how it clearly really got you going, I feel like I have to ask, what exactly is another reasonable interpretation for “How impactful is a damaged label?” I mean I know I have a low-post count and everything, and I’m obviously very low on the popularity totem pole around here, but wouldn’t it be a near certain assumption that if I knew of wineberserkers.com, had bottles of Cayuse in my possession (which are hard to find, and need to be tracked down), and knew enough to talk about “cheap racking,” that I presumably did NOT mean “how impactful is a ripped label to the wine inside?”

Seems to me that people saying “Impactful of what?” is a prime example of that which I described earlier: Internet messageboard s_it-stirrers, who get a kick out of pointing out poor spelling, and seem to love feigning a lack of understanding for anything less than a perfectly written post.

It was a crappy day and one reason I took those posts off was that I was taking it out on you. Sorry about that.

At the same time, don’t ask for help and then immediately bitch at people who are trying to help or even who ask a question you might have thought was obvious. This has nothing to do with ‘internet message boards’ or anything - it’s basic etiquette. If someone scanned your post and missed the "trying to move’ phrase, it wasn’t clear what you were thinking of. Sure we can infer that you’re asking about resale value.

Look, if you ask for help or an opinion, it’s up to YOU to be clear. If several people missed your point, consdier this - it’s probably not us. it’s you. So instead of bitching, just say “Thought it was clear, but I’m looking to sell the bottle” - is that so hard? In fact, you had several answers before Joe’s question, so I’m not sure what your problem is or was.

No problem at all really. I wasn’t even really upset at all, more of a “side smirk, head shaking 'seriously???” And I agree I could have simply said “sorry, should have been clearer,” and not called out what I thought was a rude response. But, given all the bickering, semantic games, and general silliness I’ve seen on these boards recently, I decided I’d call a spade, a spade…Which by the way, although not important any longer, was not even directed at you. Your initial response was relevant and didn’t even register negatively at all. It was the innane “how much of an impact on what,” comment that was so silly to me. Now that I think about it, I’m not even really sure why you got so upset at me, or yaacov in the first place (not knowing the guy, or his posting style, I thought what he sent your way was a friendly, good natured ribbing…in response to some other guys post even…)

But hey, everyone has bad days, and I’m certainly not looking to argue anymore. I could have written a clearer sentence, yes, but lets just be honest here, Joe’s little snippet almost certainly didn’t mistake anything. He was being a smart-a_$.

Just thank your lucky stars the capsule still spins…It does still spin doesn’t it?

Don’t worry chris, once you read enough of ricks post you’ll realize it’s not a bad day. It’s just a day .

Rick change your sig to " this is just how I am" and new posters like chris won’t feel offended in the long run. Hehehehe
