My uncle just emailed me a wine question to which I do not know the answer. A quick search online also did not turn up anything.
Apparently, a wealthy friend of his has a few bottles of wine that are around 5 gallons (18L bottles???), but didn’t bother considering the logistics of opening them when he bought them. How does one go about opening bottles of this size? Do they make special cork screws for this? I don’t know what type of wine or bottle, the width or depth of the cork, or anything else.
Besides chalking this up to “rich people problems,” can someone offer any advice?
Never opened one myself, but my buddy at Anderson’s Conn Valley just recommended against the two corkscrew method. He said use a normal corkscrew (I assume a waiter’s corkscrew) and if it only pulls out cork, that actually releases pressure from the sides of the cork. Then, reinsert the corkscrew closer to the edge and it should pop right out. Good luck!
