Once & Future 2024 Vintage Release

Anybody buying? The OVZ sounds awesome, if it’s really just a blend of top Sonoma sites.

Our Spring release, featuring the Once & Future 2024 vintage wines, will take place at 9:00 am PST on Tuesday, March 3, 2026.

The offering will be open until 11:59 pm PST on
Friday, March 13, 2026.

I will be releasing several vineyard-designated wines from my 2024 vintage and our 2024 Old Vine Zinfandel (a nod to my best-selling Vintners Blend and Sonoma County wines from Ravenswood days).

2024 Bedrock Vineyard Zinfandel
“The 2024 Zinfandel Bedrock Vineyard is a powerful, savory offering. Dark-fleshed fruit, scorched earth, tobacco, incense and licorice give the Bedrock its super-distinctive earthy character. The field blend includes a healthy dollop of mixed blacks that seem to speak quite strongly in 2024. The Peterson family purchased this site in 2003. Recent changes in farming seem to be moving the wines in a very positive direction.”

2024 Belloni Vineyard Zinfandel
“The 2024 Zinfandel Belloni Vineyard is classic Russian River Zinfandel. Bold, juicy and exuberant, the 2024 is such a joy. Silky contours wrap around a core of dark red/purplish fruit, lavender, spice and new leather. Soaring floral overtones explode on the back end. This is Russian River at its finest. Dollops of Carignane, Petite Sirah, Mataro, Alicante Bouschet and a handful of other mixed blacks round out the field blend.”

2024 Old Hill Ranch Zinfandel
“The 2024 Zinfandel Old Hill Vineyard is a powerful, deceptively mid-weight wine. Blackberry, gravel, incense, tobacco, licorice and dried herbs are all amplified in the glass. Bright acids and beams of supporting tannin shape the long, persistent finish. The 2024 is gorgeous, but it is also embryonic. This historic site was first planted with wine grapes in 1852. Joel Peterson helped revive this vineyard in the early 1980s and has been associated with it since, a remarkable streak that spans four decades. Wines like this are more than just wine—they are a window into the rich history of Sonoma County and its legacy field-blend vineyards (in this case planted with more than 30 varieties), bur through a modern lens. A recent bottle of Peterson’s 1986, made at Ravenswood, was a fine testament to the potential of this site, potential that has only grown under the stewardship of proprietor Will Bucklin and viticulturist Phil Coturri.”

2024 Teldeschi Vineyard “Frank’s Block” Zinfandel
“The 2024 Zinfandel Teldeschi Vineyard Frank’s Block is complex, dynamic and constantly changing in the glass. These 120+ year-old vines confer serious intensity. Readers should plan on cellaring this for at least a few years. Blackberry, sage, menthol, licorice and new leather literally stain the palate. The 2024 is dense, exceptionally vivid and polished. It is the purest essence of Dry Creek.”

2024 Vogensen Vineyard Zinfandel
“The 2024 Zinfandel Vogensen Vineyard is a bright, vibrant wine. Crushed berry fruit, slate, chalk, mint and orange peel are finely delineated throughout. This mid-weight, nervy Zinfandel has a ton of character and the charm to match.”

2024 Old Vine Zinfandel
“The 2024 Old Vine Zinfandel is a blend of barrels from Bedrock, Old Hill, Teldeschi and Belloni, some of the oldest and most historic ranches in Sonoma. A gorgeous, overachieving wine, the Old Vine Zinfandel races across the palate with layers of bright red/purplish-hued fruit, blood orange and pomegranate. Sweet floral overtones lift the mid-palate and finish effortlessly.”

The case quantities are limited. Each wine is handcrafted in small, open-topped redwood fermenters, fermented with native yeast and indigenous malolactic bacteria. All are aged in small French oak cooperage. These wines are a clear expression of my intent for Once & Future and a tribute to traditional winemaking.

Thank you for your support of Once & Future. I look forward to sharing these wines with you soon!

Cheers,
Joel

Going to be my last buy. There’s a couple I have to get.

Old Hill, Belloni, Teldeschi, Vogensen…classics. Will definitely be buying.

I’m still pretty new around here. What can you tell me about Vogensen, as it compares to other SVDs?

It has always struck me as the archetype zin with its red berry fruit and peppery spice, and drinks well right on release. I find the others need a bit of age to show their best, which is not to say Vogensen isn’t a serious wine like the others, it’s just more exuberant and easier to enjoy in its youth.

Very interesting. I was just reading on Joel’s site and learned that Vogensen was actually the first Ravenswood wine, as well as inspiring the namesake of the winery. Very cool.

I had a 2019 Teldeschi the other night. Quite good.

Pricing has not been released obviously but I will not be buying. Too much wine on hand already. But for you buyers I suggest going deep. I have a feeling Joel is going to hit retirement soon.

When one runs out of space one runs out and acquires another 250-bottle unit.

The ‘23s were $42-48++, so even if there’s an increase this year I would expect something around $55 at most, which IMO is quite reasonable for the quality. I think we’ll see a modest increase, perhaps $3/b+/- though I have nothing on which to base this assumption.

The 2023 O&F all-in prices were on par with what I paid all-in for the 2006 Turley Dragon, Pesenti and Mead. I can’t imagine what those are priced at nowadays. The way I am looking at it is that it’s taken O&F 17 years to “catch up” to Turley. I was only on the Turley list for the 2004-2006 vintages as we didn’t really enjoy the style.

A couple of weeks ago I opened a ‘23 Green & Red with friends and they immediately asked if I would add some bottles to the upcoming order for them. They want almost a case, so I’m just hoping there’s enough to go around.

As to Joel retiring in the near future, who knows? He’s not young, lol, and it’s hard work and he’s done it for a long time so he has certainly earned it. However, when we visited with him last February, he had a twinkle in his eye and he just enjoyed talking wine so much. You’d have thought he was just starting out on a new path with all of the joy and excitement of someone just getting going. The passion and joy is clearly still there and it’s hard to imagine someone retiring when they’re having so much fun.

I have not bought the last two years, but Turley had not escalated much at all when I picked up some ‘22s.

I always say no. Then I buy some. They all only last through the Once phase. Never any left for the Future.

The release is out! Pricing is very agreeable.

Placed a small order. I presume with re-full retirement looming in the fall that it will be my last. :frowning:

I’m buying a 6-pack of the Sonoma OVZ. The blend sounds awesome, and the price is very attractive. Hopefully it makes a nice cellar defender.

I wasn’t planning on buying (even though i love the wines) but the OVZ super Cuvée sounded too good…especially at $25 a pop. Had to snag 4

I don’t need more Zinfandel based wines or field blends but these are really good and the prices are reasonable, so I ordered 6.

I like these guys. I ordered. They shipped already. Boom. Done.
