On a nice summer evening six of us gathered together on the patio @ Oegstgeest to taste some interesting wines and a big surprise …
1996 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut- France, Champagne
Focused and mineral nose of intense citrus and green apples. On the palate amazingly rich fruit with brilliant acidity that carried the wine with tremendous complexity and excellent length — youthful with huge potential. (95 pts.)
1977 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre- France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
Advanced nose of aged white fruit and mushroom. The palate was expansive with great complexity and structure. Full of very mature notes and some acidity lurking beneath – amazing. (92 pts.)
1999 Domaine Roulot Meursault 1er Cru Bouchères- France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Rich exotic fruit and a twist of orange peel. A perfect balance between the fruit and integrated acidity with wonderful tension and length – spectacular now. (93 pts.)
1999 Domaine Leflaive Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet- France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Seemed overwhelmed by the 1999 Bouchères at first. However, with time, the BBM kept gaining and unfurling into a longer and more intense experience – impressive. (94 pts.)
1967 Gaja Barbaresco- Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
The 1967 Gaja from magnum was in style light, elegant and refined. Very tasty with mature ripe fruit, liquorice and plums – ready and absolutely delicious. (93 pts.)
2010 Maison Ilan Chambertin- France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
Wow complex flavors and aromas of red and black cherries, plum, spice and earth. On the palate perfectly focused and balanced with stunning grip on the very pure and intense finish - what a gorgeous wine this is. (95 pts.)
2012 Georges Noellat Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes- France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
I really love this 2012 Chaumes and the primary mix of cherries, red plums and rounded tannins, very transparent and tasty - superb juice. (92 pts.)
2003 Château Montrose- France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
A wine with smooth tannin, great fruit concentration, black tea and earth. A wine of power, concentration and enormous texture as well as longevity – this was deep and big. (93 pts.)
1945 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste- France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
On the nose a bit of dirt from the forest floor and more Madeira notes. On the palate brick and - interesting in a perverse way. NR
2006 Domaine Patrick Javillier Corton-Charlemagne- France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Buttery minerals, utterly flamboyant, with white and yellow fruit and vanilla-laced toast - very forward and tasty. (92 pts.)
Nice set of wines. Interesting to see the 77 Raveneau still holding well in an off vintage. And thanks for the note on the 2010 Maison Ilan Chambertin, but I’m waiting to open my lone bottle. But I think the 2003 Montrose is a little less stellar then the original hype.
Jerry - unfortunately a few weeks ago the 1995 Raveneau MDT was oxed. The Montrose for my palate was too big … for now I got more pleasure out of the Burgundies !
The young guy at Georges Noellat is supposed to be an up and coming star. Have you had many of his wines? Any other producers you would compare them to?
I had a few 2010’s from Maxime Cheurlin (Domaine Georges Noellat), his wines are in style maybe very close to Emmanuel Rouget’s.
More young, top new wine makers from Vosne; Charles van Canneyt (Domaine Alain Hudelot-Noëllat) - the sons of Rouget - Sebastien Cathiard - Nicole Lamarche …
Nice notes and an interesting disparity from 1945- 2012. Of special interest to me is anything 45 and all things Krug from 96. This is my idea of a good patio time.
Kinda confused with your 2003 Montrose comment as I have a couple of these and I genuinely appreciate the data point. But when you find it too big and don’t get as much pleasure as the Burgundies and yet you scored it the same as, or higher than, 5 Burgundies that you describe as amazing, superb, delicious, spectacular.
