I’m looking for off-site storage options in London, ideally close to central London, but I can also make do with locations that are further away if they have reasonable delivery services. I’m in Chelsea fwiw (classic American expat rent boy move).
Have had great luck working with services in New York, such as River Valley as well as OG Domaine.
No real advantage to central or even near to London storage vs just storing at Octavian. Case in point. Emailed Nexus (cellar mgt people I deal with who handle all my stuff at octavian) last thursday at 3pm saying I needed a bottle the next day. It was sorted and delivered to me by lunchtime.
PS Welcome to London! I’m nearby in Knightsbridge. There’s a very strong community on Tom Cannavan’s winepages site with lots of dinners/tastings organised. You should definitely sign up for a “wimps” lunch!
Hi Faryan
I use Big Yellow wine storage. They originally opened in Fulham in Southwest London SW6 a few years ago before covid, and then opened another storage at King’s Cross, which is a bit more central and a mile from where I live in N1. When you store with Octavian, London City Bond, or one of the merchants you have limited flexibility, in that you usually have to withdraw by the case/carton. With Big Yellow you can rent a space and come and go as you please.
You pay a bit more than traditional storage but in my opinion it is worth it for the extra flexibility if you have limited storage at home. I had wine stored at BY Fulham originally but moved it all to BY King’s Cross in 2024. I also have wine stored at merchants like Farr and Seckford, both of which are very good, but have a pretty big stash at BY and I dip in and out of it a lot.
Regarding price nothing is really fixed with BY where as Octavian, London City Bond and the merchants tend to have semi-fixed prices, which have been creeping up. I think BY have a fair bit of spare capacity, contrary to what they might infer, so you can negotiate with them.
Edit just reread your first post. If you are in Chelsea the Fulham BY would be really close and a good option.
Can’t speak for other storage options, but there’s no issue at all with taking out individual bottles from nexus/octavian. I’ve done it many, many times.
You must have a special relationship with Octavian then Dan. I have never been able to take individual bottles out of Octavian, LCB or any other merchant apart from Seckford very occasionally sort of as a one off, or Lay & Wheeler, who I think are back peddling a bit given the handling costs involved in picking out individually bottles. The UK Wine Society (TWS) is however quite flexible and allows you to withdraw in three bottle lots, and does not charge for delivery. If you are planning on living in the UK for a while TWS membership might be worth considerating. There is a one off lifetime joining fee which I think is £40.
