Offline: The Big Bedrock Tasting

One day, @B_Caputo innocently joked about how he has a 100 bottles of bedrock and never opens any because they’re in a eurocave in his sister’s basement.

I laughed.
He laughed.
I looked at him.
He looked at me.
Suddenly no one was laughing anymore.

The evening was epic.

The next time a family member looks at you like you’re a literal alien bc you’ve “collected” an absurd of amount of wine - it’s filled the designated wine space, spawned new wine spaces in your house, in your family’s houses, local municipal offices, etc. just remember - you don’t have to be an insane wino who really needs to get their buying under control.

Instead, You could be… a HERO.

Be like Brian.

Be a hero.

(And make sure to invite me)

Even though we had a literal professional photographer gracing us, you’re all stuck with my terrible photos. Will add notes later.

This was so immensely enjoyable. So much gratitude for these guys!

There wasn’t a bad wine of the bunch, but for me the winners were Chuy Chard ‘17, Weill a Way Syrah ‘14, and Oakville Farmhouse ‘18. All the wines had a bit of a rustic iron (except maybe Pagani ranch which was all sweet red fruits) but my favorites also incorporated a velvety plushness that was hard to put down.

Huge thanks to @gavin.f and @B_Caputo for hosting this!

Very fun night and thanks to Gavin and Brian again and nice to meet everyone else.

Agree with Jesse for the most part on the winners for me Chuy 17 (didn’t even know Bedrock had made a Chard and don’t love most Chards), Weil a Way (both 14 and 15 but 14 slightly ahead, the 14 was my friend Mike’s favorite), but I much preferred the 15 farmhouse

Super educational evening.

I dig the effort Bedrock puts into finding, supporting, and making wine from old vineyards, vines, less popular grapes and blends, etc. God’s work.

But, I did not have my arms around the portfolio.
They make so much. Until now, I’d only had very young vintages. The whites I’d enjoyed. The young reds were no to my taste.

Under the Wire 2021 Bedrock Vineyard Zinfandel funky and fresh, later nattier more fruit punch. great acidity throughout. Very good
Under the Wire 2015 Brosseau Chardonnay brioche big yellow fruit pear very good Very good
Under the wire 2013 Alder Springs Pinot Noir brioche red fruit. Next day chocolatey? Great the night before
I liked these more than most. I’m def a buyer at current secondary pricing ~$50

2015 Staves of Waidhofen Sauvignon Blanc Smells great very oak-driven synthesis of Sauvignon Blanc with classic varietal notes nose excellent! Alas, palate is faded. Dropped off by min 20. Drink 'em if you got 'em.
Bet this was great 5 years ago.

2016 Chuy Chardonnay apple touch of spice fresher-focused but a little boring forgettable not insulting
2017 Chuy Chardonnay great concentration saline rip dancing fruits very good held up well overnight later too jammy and rough touching excellent
2017 was very impressive

2018 Carlisle Zinfandel calmer feels worked over less exuberant Very good
2015 Carlisle Zinfandel quintessential port-like verasion ripe fresh unique not my style but magnificent
Quintessence of Zin. Best of zin vineyards for me

2014 Monte Rosso pretty but too well-behaved = forgettable. Good
2015 Monte Rosso plain Jane tight repressed hold 5 years
2018 Monte Rosso missing note was neither bad not memorable
These suffered for going after Carlisles which just had more pizazz.

2014 Bedrock Heritage yum juice more complex little heat blue fruit very good great next day Very good
2015 Bedrock Heritage still yum easier pepper good overnight 87
2018 Bedrock Heritage more tannins perfume sour sop leather did not improve overnight
2020 Bedrock Heritage possible brett punchy tannic. Fell out overnight. Good today, could be excellent in the future
2021 Bedrock Heritage more sweetness pepper developing. good next day more Sauvage. Very good. Surprise
Very impressed here

2015 Gibson Ranch oak big vanilla sweetness plush overworked great fruit underneath. Sadge.
Angry at the lipstick here.

2015 Evangelo lighter candy red fruit licorice estery fig fascinating. Super cool.
Was bad until 30mins of air

2016 Pagani yum juice glou glou sweet fruit slight verasion very drinkable.
2018 Pagani darker more weight viscous than younger brother. very good
Delicious Drank

2016 Under the Mountain mixed ripeness fermented strawberry leather improved overnight Very good
2017 Under the Mountain also higher personality. Like it
These benefited from lots of air

2015 Oakville Farmhouse complete tart red and black berries cab-like licorice underripe unique
2018 Oakville Farmhouse quiet tannin cola needs time
Both these were special. Your brain thinks “Cab,” but then your sense show you it’s something else. I did not think they were so much better than the others to justify the price increase, but objectively special.

2015 Lorenzo weird nose shows some premature aging. nice palate. flawed
stuffing was good

2015 Hudson Vineyard Syrah TNS Carneros tannins useful long future blue fruit Saint-Joseph more gonon next day.
2018 Hudson Vineyard Syrah TNS Carneros less expressive disliked very acidic next day
Too young, both have structure that asks for more time

2014 Weill a Way Syrah Gonon blue fruit touch oak iron viognier lift great perfume acid very tasty new world Gonon style. Great
2015 Weill a Way Syrah better with air, but less soaring than 2014. Good
Surprised how old world the nod was here. Would not say no to these!

2015 Montecillo Cabernet green Bordeaux nose, chocolate in mouth. confusing. fell off overnight
2017 Montecillo Cabernet correct less green lacks wow factor very good
not loving the cabs

2010 Bedrock Sonoma Valley Cabernet Sauvignon modern Napa vanilla ripe fruit, “seemless.” calmed down next day. very good if you like this sort of thing.
meh

2018 Monte Rosa Cabernet straight down fairway varietally correct
more exciting cabs out there

In Summary, I thought the bubbles were great for non-champs and Very good objectively.
The whites continued to stand out to me, and I take '15 Staves as a good range finder for how long to age 'em.
Reds, scattered, some stuff just too modern for my taste, other fine. There is an Italian vibe often coming forward in the field blends.
Cabs didn’t move me.
Zins and fields blends for the wine. Carslisle, Bedrock, Evangelo (low confidence), Oak
Syrah - better than expected.

Bravo everyone!

You couldn’t find the 2018 monterosso because I screwed up when I first posted the wines and it was not a zin but a cab. So not missing but caught under your cab note.

I didn’t love the under the wire sparklers. Fell under the more interesting than delicious spectrum for me. And I should have looked closer in the cellar to see that the 2013 was sparkling Pinot.

The two Chuy moon mountain chards were both very good. If that was at one of our double blind tasting I’m sure I would have embarrassed myself calling them white burg instead of Cali. But either way I think they were probably only the third time I drank the chards and I really enjoyed them and neither seemed too crowd shy or ready to drop off the cliff.

The sauv blanc was over the hill and a bit strange to me. Later on I restarted and felt it was Super saline.

We switched up the order from what I had originally printed and went syrah before the zins and field blends. These to me were some of the wines of the night. The 2014 Weill a Way Syrah was outstanding. Again, another embarrassing blind call for me if we had been guessing I’m sure. But powerful, complex, and still getting better. 2015 wasn’t as good but also was a big departure in winemaking style from the notes in the newsletter (something like 100% new oak in 14 vs 25% in 15 amongst other things.

The Hudson t&s blocks were good but I didn’t think showing their best. Maybe they needed to be decanted and get more air. Still had the stuffing to continue to age and maybe this was just an awkward moment.

My other favorite of the night were the oakville farmhouse wines. They were both complex, big wines that really did give the impression of high quality cab maybe seen through different colored glasses. Certainly very interesting wines and would have liked to spend more time with them.

Thanks again @gavin.f for hosting and organizing. It was a wonderful night. Thanks to the folks who brought extra vintages just to share some younger stuff with everyone. And thanks all who contributed to the pleasant conversation and very good night.
