For some reason the WTSO customers only gave the WeatherEye Syrah Red Mountain 2020 an 89 rating. I’ve noticed that this frequently happens with professionally reviewed highly rated wines at WTSO. I’m wondering if people are just drinking them too young or they don’t like the flavor profiles of serious wines. My late friend Ralph admitted that he couldn’t taste the difference between a $10 wine and an $80 wine. I have run into other drinkers that have the same lack of tasting ability.

Customer reviews are easily skewed as it may only be one customer.
Kind of like how some idiot on Cellartracker can throw the ratings way off.
WTSO does accumulate customer scores before publishing a score but it can still be skewed by 1 or 2 scores. There are some people that have what 1 wine reviewer called “An Immature Palette”. They only like simple, very fruity wine and can’t detect or appreciate complexity in wine. I’ve been at tastings before where 2 or 3 of these people caused a cheap everyday drinker wine to win out over an excellent quality Pinot.

I think at this point having had a few of their wines at list price and being a value buyer I would still say they have all been easily worth $80. They’d be better values at a lower dollar, but I haven’t had a bad Weathereye wine. Their Bordeaux grape bottlings are also excellent. I remember being underwhelmed by their white blend and I have never had their clairette.
If I’m not mistaken, I came to learn about Kobayashi thru looking for other wines from that vineyard.
All that said, I managed restraint the other day and didn’t purchase any more bottles.

I believe there are a segment of people that believe this wine (and others from the region in this vintage) are smoke-tainted
I have only had a couple 2020 from red mountain.
Last night at a rehearsal dinner they served ch. st. Michelle 20 block 9 cab. No smoke taint.
Same for fidelitas products.
Weather eye at $39 is an easy decision.
Would like to see the Syrah pop back up.

The 2014 Padis at $34.99 is an excellent deal. I’ve had the 2013 Padis multiple times and throughly enjoyed them.
The Padis is definitely full bodied and fruit forward but very well done.
The 2022 Optik Syrah at $13 is also an excellent deal. I’ve had the 2021 and thought it was good. The 2022 has 14.4% ABV, which is considerably lower than the 2021. Is suspect the 2022 is better. Quite enjoyable for a weekday wine.

Looks like the 2021 Syrah finally made its way to the party. Full disclosure, I didn’t buy these sales, but I’ve had the Grenache and Mourvedre and the Grenache from 2020 was a 10/10 wine. Cant really speak to their syrah.

I just bought 2 bottles of the 98 Pt.WeatherEye Syrah Red Mountain 2021, still up now. Put on ship hold until 10/20.

Impressive how quickly that wine sold out. Makes me think I should have bought some…
Maybe we’ll get the mourvedre next.
If we get the Bordeaux blends or cab I’ll dance. Or the 2020 grenache but that ship probably sailed.
