Thread drift warning here, skip the paragraph below if you are a purist about these things. My wife, who usually does Drynuary (and eats sensibly, exercises regularly etc etc, i.e. recovering Catholic) decided to do āOne-uaryā this year instead (One unit of alcohol, her preferred delivery system being wine).
Thread drift : This amount is actually what the US surgeon general says women should limit themselves to for optimal health, although it seems in other countries YMMV. Formerly being in the medical biz, it seems to me that there really is a consistent statistical āU-shaped curveā with non drinkers having higher mortality than light drinkers. Like all stats, the devil is in the details or lack of them, and the argument is always put forward that ānon-drinkersā include people too sick to tolerate alcohol . Having been, as I said, in the medical biz for many years I came to the conclusion that the extra 10 years you might get from living a highly abstemious life are likely not going to be your best 10 years, and many people get blindsided by illness or accident despite saintly intentions. Instead, I tend to subscribe to the Hunter S. Thompson school of living life while you can, with the caveat that a degree of moderation is good, too.
This year, we are thrilled that our daughter is visiting for January, and being a good millennial she likes her cocktails and wine. So, āOne-uaryā for the wife to be able to drink sociably with our daughter when she gets back to the ancestral abode in the evenings from her busy vet school elective rotation and is ready for a drink with her boomer parents, neither of whom can as much as they used to.
No wine, no problem. Iāve decided not to sweat the weight loss thing. I am still restricting carbs and doing intermittent fasting, but I am allowing myself some grace. This morningās tea did not sit well, so I chased it with saltine cracker instead of waiting it out until lunchtime. And I had a couple of crackers with the charcuterie leftovers from the dry cocktail class. Along those lines, this dry Sidecar recipe looks very interesting.
For the musical selection, I thought about doing another waltz, but that will have to wait. Letās continue with peace, love, and harmony on this January 6th, 2022. Weāre all in this together.
Honorable Mention āAmericaā - Yes. The venerable English prog band started their career doing covers that turned the original inside out. This one is no exception.
No one responded to this so I will! We donāt make any money from Acid League. Just simply like their product. Itās a great option to feel like youāre drinking when donāt want to or canāt!
I have my first real ātestā tonight. My brother is in town on business and I meeting him at a great Italian restaurant with a good list. I will be drinking water!
Iām doing dry January this year as well but will probably make 1-2 exceptions for a glass of champagne due to a few celebratory milestones this month. That being said, one recommendation that helps me avoid weeknight drinking are non-alcoholic cocktails - Bitters & Soda | Hella Cocktail Co.. If you like negronis and similar cocktails, these are great on ice. Whole Foods carries them. During stints of abstinence, I treat myself to one on weekend nights when Iām habitually used to having wine.
I like the main Bitters & Soda drink (the aromatic one) that has some sugar and thus 90 calories. Itās not guilt free but I find that the sugarless ones are too bitter for my tastes without the sugar. When not abstaining, these also make for nice mixers.
