About Day Wines

I am a 4th generation Pacific NW native with an acute case of wanderlust. It all began when I was 19, traveling in northern Italy, where I first fell in love with wine. I came home from that trip with 18 bottles in my backpack and a fire lit in my heart.

In my twenties I sold my possessions and traveled around the world continuously for two years, to wine producing regions - I reached some 80 wine regions on this trip. Throughout that journey I tasted over 1500 wines, worked on vineyards, met winemakers, vineyard growers and somms. The wines that stood out for me the most were made with organic or biodynamic fruit and native fermentation, low use of new wood, limited filtration etc. When I returned to Oregon, I worked nine production internships with small, hands-on producers utilizing these methods. I honed my craft on the restaurant side as a wine director and server, and the sales side as a rep for a French cooperage.

In 2012 I made five barrels of Pinot Noir. Through the years I had discovered other grape varieties being grown around Oregon, and I reflected upon how Oregon is comparable in size to European countries and how one or two champion grape varieties weren’t enough to express all of the diversity I knew existed in my state. It would be a travesty if Italy only grew Sangiovese or Nebbiolo. I wrote a business plan and was working four jobs to pay for my second vintage. Through one of the jobs I met some folks who decided to help propel my plans. With their loans I was able to grow my production significantly and I now own and operate a custom crush facility, and have started a new winery in Piedmont with our first releases coming out this spring. I have been really happy to receive a lot of press and accolades, from the New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Oregonian, Wine Enthusiast, etc as well as a James Beard Award nomination for best wine producer in 2020, and I have been named in several books. But studying and exploring the diversity of the place that is Oregon through dozens of grape varieties, has really been the gratifying thing for me.

I’d love to hear what you think of our wines, and thank you in advance for your support!

Day Wines In Depth

2024 Vin de Days blanc - Pinot Blanc (27%), Müller Thurgau (22%), Riesling (19%), Muscat (16%), Pinot Gris (16%). PH 3.27, TA 6.3 g/l, 12.5% ABV. Yellow and pink apple, juicy yellow peach and apricot, and exotic floral wildness dominate the nose. The palate reflects the nose with the addition of spicy ginger, lemon oil, and cherry blossom. Grapes were direct-pressed, co-fermented stainless steel tank, and completed malolactic fermentation, as well as alcoholic fermentation, and was bottled with minimal sulfur.

2024 Vin de Days l’Orange - 33% Müller Thurgau, 32% Riesling, 18% Pinot Gris, 17% Gewurztraminer. PH 3.47, TA 6.3 g/l, 12.4% ABV. Ripe Blood orange and Meyer lemon. Expressive tropical notes of starfruit, guava, and mango shine through, supported by aromas of rose water and sweet herbs. Grapes were destemmed into 1.5-ton fermenters, and skin macerated fermentation kicked off spontaneously. Punch downs were twice per day. When it became dry, we racked the wine and pressed into neutral oak barrels to age and complete malolactic fermentation. This vintage was filtered with partial malo, to keep the acid in a fresh place.

2023 Dazzles of Light - Chardonnay (60%); Sauvignon blanc (31%); Melon de Bourgogne (9%). PH 3.47, TA 5.9 g/l, 12.32% ABV. Mango, lime, and a little clean grass and fresh thyme, chalk, creamy lemon curd, white peach, honeycomb, and a little leesy brioche. It is really delicious. Grapes were direct pressed and settled 24 hours then racked off lees into neutral French oak barrels for spontaneous primary and malolactic fermentation. Filtered and cold stabilized. The only addition was a total SO2 addition of 40ppm.

2023 Isla Vermentino - Named for my niece. Layne Vineyard in the Applegate Valley, 1500 feet elevation. Planted originally in 1970, grafted to Vermentino in 2009. PH 3.23, TA 5.3, 13% ABV (sustainable). Notes of lemon oil, lemon curd, lime, white peach, and soft floral aromas. The pallet is crisp, but full with citrus and stone fruit, a hint of briny olive, and a salty bright zesty finish. Direct pressed fruit, cold settled for 24 hours and racked off lees to neutral French oak 500 L puncheons. Fermentation was spontaneous and complete, and malolactic fermentation was complete. Cold stabilized and bottled with only a small addition of 40ppm total SO2.

2021 Eola Springs Chardonnay - PH 3.41, TA 5.7 g/l, 13% ABV. Hyde-Wente, Mt. Eden, and Dijon 96 clones, planted in the late 90’s in the Eola Amity Hills (sustainable). The wine is lively, lithe, and has a solid mineral structure with a supple and glossy mid palate. Lemon curd, peaches, river stones, lime zest, sweet orange, honeysuckle and a hint of pastry. Grapes were gently pressed, settled cold in stainless steel and racked to a mix of barrique and puncheon. 30% new barrels from cooperages who focus on structure as opposed to wood flavors. Spontaneous primary and malo fermentation and no lees stirring to focus on purity and clarity of flavors. 18 months in barrel, unfined and unfiltered.

2023 Aurora Vineyard Arneis - PH 3.44, TA 5.0 g/l, 13.5% ABV. Planted by the Ponzi family in Chehalem Mountains in 1991 (sustainable). Exotic ginger, jasmine, pear, quince, almond blossom. Silky and supple, balanced with tension and minerality. Grapes were direct pressed and settled, then racked to our largest puncheon, a neutral French oak 700 L. Spontaneous complete primary and malo fermentation, unfined and unfiltered.

2022 Infinite Air Castles - 58% Gamay & 42% Dolcetto - PH 3.49, TA 6.4 g/l, 13% ABV. Rosy floral and juicy with blueberries and boysenberry, grilled plums, cracked pepper, dark berries, obsidian minerals, petrichor, and summer forest. Bright juicy acid, a plush and velvety mid palate, and a long firm structure. 20% whole cluster, spontaneous fermentation, elevage in neutral 500 L puncheons for 11 months. 44ppm total SO2.

2022 Johan Vineyard Pinot Noir - Pommard, 828, 667, 777 clones. PH 3.62, 5.6 TA, 13% ABV. Van Duzer Corridor AVA, planted in 2002 (certified Biodynamic). A deep core of red fruit; raspberry, cranberry, blood orange, pomegranate, with Oregon evergreen forest, black tea, dried thyme, Christmas spice. Moderate tannins and a long finish. 30% whole cluster, spontaneous fermentation, gentle punch downs. Elevage in a mix of barrique and puncheon, French oak, 15% new, for 23 months.

2022 Momtazi Vineyard Pinot Noir - Pommard, 777, 667 clones. PH 3.37, 6.3 g/l TA, 12.82% ABV. McMinnville AVA, 750 feet elevation, planted in 1998 (certified Biodynamic). Deeply blueberry, blackberry, black cherry, unsweetened coco powder, rooibos, huckleberry. Persistent, fine tannins and mouth watering acidity. 30% whole cluster, spontaneous fermentation, gentle pigeage. Elevage in a mix of barrique and puncheon, French oak, 15% new, for 23 months.

2022 Nemarniki Vineyard Gamay & Pinot Noir - Pommard clone Pinot Noir planted in 2011, and Gamay planted in 2019 at 700 feet elevation in the Chehalem Mountains AVA. PH 3.6, TA 5.8, 12.8% ABV (organic farming). A bouquet of flowers with ripe, delicate fruit. Roses, violets, hyacinth, strawberries, red cherry. Delicate tannin and present acid. All destemmed fruit, spontaneous fermentation, gentle punchdowns. Elevage 11 months in neutral French oak.

2022 100 Years a Lady Pinot Meunier - Named for my Grandmother. Grown in La Belle Promenade Vineyard in the Chehalem Mountains (organic), Abbey Road Farm in Yamhill Carlton (organic), and Left Coast Cellars in Van Duzer Corridor (sustainable). PH 3.55, TA 6.4, 12.65% ABV. Still, red Pinot Meunier is such a revelation! Beautiful raspberry fruit and leaf, wild strawberry, red plum, sweet mint and flinty obsidian. Elegant but with a charmingly rustic side.

2022 Aurora Vineyard Dolcetto - PH 3.52, TA 6.8, 14% ABV. Planted by the Ponzi family in Chehalem Mountains in 1991 (sustainable). Deep black cherries, black figs, dried raspberry, blueberries, cured meats (finocchiona, duck prosciutto), roast lamb in a chimichurri of mint, oregano, lemon peel. A little tar in the finish.

2022 Wrapped Around Your Finger - Named for my partner. Malbec (42%), Cabernet Franc (24%), Merlot (12%), Tannat (12%), Cabernet Sauvignon (10%). PH 3.69, TA 6.1, 12.9% ABV. From three organically farmed vineyards in the Rogue River AVA of southern Oregon. Fresh with red fruits and spice. Bright raspberry and plum, cedar, black pepper, and earthy mushroom, and a hint of tobacco. Black cherry, black plum, and black raspberry, leafy raspberry tea, pepper, clove and anise. 25% whole cluster, spontaneous fermentation, and long (30 month) elevage in a variety of oversized, neutral French oak barrels.

2023 Achelous Mondeuse - PH 3.68, TA 5.6, 12.7% ABV. Grown in Johan Vineyards in the Van Duzer Corridor AVA (Biodynamic). Cherry-cranberry, mushroom umami, wisteria, a hint of cola. Juicy, mild tannin, full mid-palate.

My local tasting group plus Indy Berserkers @Franklin_R and @Charles_Perry (plus Heather, Charlie’s better half) made a nice day out of Day Wines. Day Wines is an all-female team led by Brianne Day. Located in Dundee, they are really leaning into the wide variety of grapes that are grown in Oregon.

Ten of us tasted six wines over two flights. Each flight was tasted without food, then with small bites. Since I didn’t have 60 stems, we used 9oz squats to be consistent.

Flight One

2024 Vin de Days Blanc ($21) - This is a blend of Pinot Blanc, Muller Thurgau, Riesling, Muscat and Pinot Gris. It was a good entry level white and a crowd pleaser. I had recently tasted a 100% Muller Thurgau and appreciated the savory note it brought to this blend. It was good with nuts and apple slices, but it does not need food.

2024 Vin de Days Orange ($25) - Loved it. This is a blend of Muller Thurgau (33%), Riesling (32%) with the rest split between Pinot Gris and Gewurtztraminer. Full skin maceration. We thought this wine would be great on the porch in cool weather. Hints of cinnamon, apricot. Floral. The Gewurtz spices it up. It was quite good on its own, but even better with food, which brought out the “orangeness.” We kept going back to this one.

2021 Eola Chardonnay ($54) - Good acid and minerals. The oak treatment was light but it didn’t go unnoticed. The squats did not do this wine justice, at all. Full stop. I retasted this in a Grassl stem paired with a chicken thigh, and it was good! See Michael Chang’s notes in the next post.

Flight Two

2023 A Peridot Afternoon ($44 on sale for $35) - This is a young and lively Syrah from the Deux Vert vineyard. 90% Syrah, 10% Viognier. Good grapey-ness in a really good way. Depth, interest spice on the back end. The Vigonier gives it lift. @Franklin_R felt it would be nice to age this one. I agree.

2022 100 Years a Lady Pinot Meunier ($42) - This wine was as if Cab Franc and Pinot Noir had a kid. Super interesting. Dusty tannin. Very good, intense berry. With food it flattened out a little.

2022 Johan Pinot Noir ($46) - As with the Chardonnay, the squats did not do this justice. A few in our group felt like this drank like a dry Italian red, which is interesting considering Brianne’s Italian inspiration. I retasted this several hours later in a Grassl Crü and it was good! Check out Michael Chang’s notes below.

All in all, we enjoyed Day Wines. They were all pleasant, easy to drink, and had plenty of interesting characteristics. We were happy to recommend them for BerserkerDay.

Taster @MChang reports:

2023 Day Wines “Dazzles of Light” White Wine

A blend of 60% Chardonnay, 31% Sauvingnon Blanc, 9% Melon de Bourgogne. Beautiful aromatics with some white peach, hay and stone fruits. Lovely acidic core with soft texture and some canteloupe notes. Long finish.

2021 Day Wines Chardonnay Eola Springs Vineyard (Eola-Amity Hills, Oregon)

Absolutely lovely nose of hay and white peach, with crisp acidity and rounded mouth feel. This wasn’t a super mineral driven Chardonnay, but instead lithe and very crushable. The finish was clean and this wine just disappeared in what seemed like seconds. Delicious and very food friendly. My wife commented that this is a very versatile white that was great throughout its temperature range and broadly appealing to both casual drinkers and experienced white Burgundy lovers. Highly recommended.

2022 Day Wines Pinot Noir Johan Vineyard (Willamette Valley, Oregon)

Beautiful aromatics with stunning red sappy cranberries. Very clean with nice acidity on the palate and a bit of structure. Finish was pretty and lingering. Very nice wine.

2023 Day Wines Deep Blue Pinot Noir

From 100% Pinot Noir sourced from five different organically farmed vineyard sites within the Willamette Valley AVA; Cassin, Johan, Momtazi, Nemarniki, and Finnigan Hill. A bit more accessible than the single vineyard with plush red fruits on the nose, including some ripe cherries. Very crisp acidity on the palate with some more red fruits and a bit shorter finish. A less serious but equally delicious wine.

Disclosure: I received these wines at no cost for the purposes of reviewing them.

Thank you Lenny - we really appreciate it!! I hope you enjoy the wines, and I’m glad you got the all whites pack! So much good seafood in the Olympia area (I lived in Tumwater as a young kid). You’ll have to try the Isla Vermentino with some oysters from up the Peninsula. My brother-in-law grows oysters at his family’s beach on Hood Canal. I love the pairing, they bring out an incredible honeydew melon flavor from the wine.
Thanks again for the support!

Outstanding! What’s the name of your brother’s oyster farm?

Excuse me, brother-in-law.

The eola springs Chardonnay was a particular favorite for us!

Those of you who have been lucky enough to drink with Eileen Chang know that she had zero tolerance for bad wine and is perfectly willing to pour out anything. @Nick_Christie had to rescue some 2010 Dujac CSD from the dump bucket (although to her credit, I also thought it was flawed). She loved this wine and thought it was superb. We had it with a variety of drinkers of different experience levels and all really liked it. Great job!
