Obscure grape TN: Grillo

2006 Di Giovanna Grillo Sicilia IGT

Medium yellow colored. Bright and fresh. Notes of almond, pears and green apple on the nose. In mouth crisp and medium to full-bodied. Good fruit and acidity. A good food-pairing wine.

We had an '06 from Ajello recently that was under $10. Great find!

Grillo: The little grass hopper goes great with summer fare. Drink young as it tends to oxidize. Also used as slang word in Sicily for the male anatomy part that may jump up…

Funny Paul. It’s the same word in spanish as well.

Yeah,
Sicily is chock full of great little undiscovered varieties like that.

Jorge, have you ever tried Insolia, aka Ansonia?

Nope, but do have a bottle of Gulfi’s Carjcanti at home. It’s made with Caricante, another autochthonous variety of Sicily. Was introduced to it by a very good friend of mine a little over a year ago. FANTASTIC wine.
