NYC visit - Burgs at Ed’s Chowder House

Diane and I were in for a real treat hosted by the NYC crew at Ed’s Chowder House. It was a wonderful evening. This is the real deal. Don’t let the name of the restaurant fool you. No chowder this night. A beautiful room and an 7 course dinner. Everyone contributed wines and lots of thought went into selection and proper serving. My brief notes:

American Caviar/ Cured Lardon & Brioche Crisp
NV Selosse BdB Les Carelle - disgorged 2010. Citrus, honey and biscuit aromas. Oxidative style. Great balance and long on the palate. Really good!
82 Billecart Salmon BdB - yellow gold. Toast, spice, citrus, pear aromas. Good acidity and balance. Lovely. .

Maine Halibut/ Periwinkles, Sea Urchin, Sea Beans & Leeks
05 Pernot Batard - Citrus, honeysuckle. Some tropical fruit and minerality. Great structure and mouthfeel. Long on the palate.

05 Ramonet BBM - Mint, citrus, spice. Good structure and balance. Shorter finish than the 05 Pernot BM. Both excellent wines.

04 Leflaive BBM - Moderately reduced initially, but with air this dissipated. Matchstick, mineral, spice. Reminds me more of a Chevy than a Batard. Great acid and minerality on the finish.

Roasted Skuna Bay Salmon/ Cauliflower, Hazelnuts & Brussels Sprout Leaves
79 L Latour Corton Charlemagne - Wow. So fresh for a wine of this age. Peach, honey, great fruit. Viscous and nice mouthfeel. Just enough acidity to keep balance. Sweet lovely finish. White of the night for me.

88 Jadot Corton Charlemagne - yellow gold. Honey, pear, nuts. Rich with just enough acidity.

Slow Cooked Organic Hen Egg/ Pig Trotters & Black Truffle
04 Jadot Montrachet - Yellow gold. Moderately advanced. Some bruised apple notes. Ripe.

99 Jadot Montrachet - Initially I thought perhaps a bit corked. This seemed to blow off. Great volume, concentration and depth on the palate. Rich, long. Adequate acidity. Quite nice.

83 Jadot Montrachet - Great expressive nose of fruit, nuts and honey. Rich with nice balance.

California Squab/ Judson Valley Foie Gras & Squab -Prune Infusion
76 Gaston Boisseaux Beaune Montee Rouge - Old leafy notes. Some red fruits. Good acidity. Past its prime but enjoyable.

88 Leroy NSG Boudots - Wonderful nose of sous bois, stems, herbal notes. Dark fruits and earth on palate. Big wine with great balance. A great wine. WOTN for me.

93 Jadot Chambertin Clos de Beze - Earthy with nice fruit. Spice. Good stucture. Balanced, easy to drink now. Lovely wine.

98 Lambrays CdLambrays - Nice nose with some secondary. Nice structure with some dusty tannins. Loved the palate. Still good fruit. Needs more time in the cellar.

Saddle of Domestic Lamb/ Anson Mills Grits, Wilted Kale & Sweet Garlic Jus
02 Rouget Echezeaux - Dark, Lots of sweet dark fruits with a touch of oak. Ripe, lush, sappy, viscous in the mouth. All balanced with adequate acitity. This should age beautifully.

91 Rene Engel Echezeaux - Nice secondary notes. Spice, somewhat closed. Very good structure. ? more time.

96 H Noellat Richebourg - Some sous bois, mint. Nicely structured with moderate tannins and good acidity. Seems a little shut down now. It should develop nicely with more time.

93 Gros Freres et Soeur Richebourg - Dark. Very aromatic with menthol and spice. Seemed to lack a bit in the mid palate. Good acidity.

Artisanal Cheeses/ Condiments & Grilled Bread
90 Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame - Yellow gold. Dough, citrus and minerals. Nice acidity. Aging well.

88 Veuve Clicquot Vintage Rare - biscuits, apple, great acidity and length. BTW, I really love the 88 original release and I think this is a bit better.

It was a wonderful evening and it was a pleasure getting to know some new friends. Thank you Paul J for organizing, Chet K, Suzanne C, David R, Josh L, Bill L and « The Cuddler » Leo F.

Wow. Terrific lineup!
Sounds like almost all the wines showed well.
7/8 killer white Burgs on point in one night…You must be living right!
Cheers.

Dennis, next up is an all white burg dinner there. We really loved the food and the service at Ed’s. Let’s hope we stay lucky!

Roger, very nice notes and I agree with all except it sounds like I may have liked the Engel a lot more than you. I didn’t find it closed and thought it was the best drinking red of the night. I look forward to your and Diane’s next visit. Next time, we’ll have more food for you. [wink.gif]

I guess my invite got hung up in my spam folder? [snort.gif]
Sounds great, Paul.

Super set of wines and dinner company Roger!! Our turn soon with some of the NYC crowd coming out here .

God that was a great night. It was so nice to finally meet your better half, Diane is such a sweetheart. By the time of a last flight I couldn’t eat or drink anymore. 1983 Montrachet was my favorite white of the night and agree about the red, followed by 1993 Beze.

What a great line up!
Love Ed’s. Great for a pre-Lincoln Center meal, even with kids.

Paul, thanks again for organizing. I agree with you on the 91 Engel. Actually I liked it quite a bit…in fact tied for second for the reds. My notes was misleading as I just thought it has not reached plateau and has room to get even better. The other tied for second was the Rouget.

Great lineup guys!

Nice run of luck on those Jadot Montrachets.

Thanks for the fun read.

I was very happy to attend and participate at this dinner.
Too much food, and way too much wine- Exactly how I like it.

It was really nice to see old friends whom I had not seen in quite a while, and very pleased to make the acquaintance of the " Nellans’s ".

As to Roger’s notes and other’s comments, I basically agree but my two sense…

82 BS BdeB was brilliant, the Pernot was drinking better this evening than Ramonet Batard but if they survive I wouldn’t bet against the later in 10 years. What’s up with all the sulphur in Leflaive???, -the wine was impossible to taste/evaluate.

83 white burgundies have this amazing quality and consistent as I drank an 83 Drouhin Clos de Mouches Blanc last week, and it also shared a TBA dry extract exotic richness. 83 Jadot Montrachet is a hauntingly beautiful wine.

I love old wines, and each of the reds were too young for my palate, but there are some future stars amongst this group.

Generous and very fun group and looking forward to white burgundy dinner soon.

It was great meeting you Chet. I must say you are ‘one organized man’ You were spot on in terms of decanting times, etc. Hope to get together with you again in the future.

The reds were all quite young although again I thought the 91 Engel was showing beautifully but with no rush to drink.

Roger

Thank you. " Life’s too short…"
Hope to do something similar somewhere soon.

Best to you and Diane

As an aside I expect to bring both 88 and 93 Carillon Referts to our next white burgundy dinner.

Paul

Long windows of readiness for each of those reds. I was actually surprised that the 88 Boudots was so friendly, but still was purely primary, though superbly balanced and powerful.
The 93’s, 96, and 98 Lambrays were grumpy at best.

91 Engel Ech was starting to climb the ladder to maturity.
Talk soon…

The VCliquots each were very tasty but we all needed resuscitation by that point, and I was unable to pay much more than perfunctory attention to them. 90 LCD was more powerful, and the 88 Rare which has been a consistently great drink, a sleek racehorse more reflective of a beautifully drinking and for the ages vintage.

Best

Great to see notes from Chet.

Wow, that seems like an awesome night! Roger, I don’t know how the NY crowd conned you into such a night when in reality they are a highly unsocial group flirtysmile that hates to have fun or share any wine! [rofl.gif] [rofl.gif]

Hoping to see everyone relatively soon…Always a highlight of any visit!

Belated Happy New Year to all! champagne.gif

Cheers!

Chet, nice to see you on the board and drinking red wine!

We need to talk about Burgundy in May.

+1! [cheers.gif]

yes, indeed. Funny how rare it is to have a “too old” red Burg. They age and improve much longer than many think.

And, take “much longer” to “age and improve” than I’d ever imagined when I first started trying. It never ceases to amaze me…

Hey, Chet…good to hear you here.

+100
chet-hope you are doing well, Assuming you arent coming to sf for paulee this year i hope to run into you in 2015
