I would like suggestions for retailers in NYC. We are going up in December to see a bunch of shows (MJ, Maybe Happy Ending, Caberet, maybe Stereophonic). We are staying at the Edison on 47th. My spouse said I’m only allowed two wine store visits since we are going up for shows and museums. I’m cherry picking now so just looking for some things I can’t get in DC. I’m buying Northern Rhone, Piedmont, and German right now. So which two would you choose?
Flatiron
Chambers
Crush
Sommcellars
Manhattan Wine Co
677 Wine and Spirits
I would choose Flatiron and Crush for Northern Rhone, and probably for the others as well. Beg for a third store visit and go to Chambers.
I would go with Manhattan Wine Co and another not on your list: Morrell Wine.
Allegedly, Morrell is temporarily closed. I would call to find out first. Manhattan is moving down the block this weekend, so they should be fully operational.
Definitely not closed as I was there last weekend.
Morrell is always on my list when I’m in town. Flatiron has a nice selection from all three regions you mentioned as well. It’s also worth checking their website for new items in the few weeks before you go. They post a lot of stuff they get in small quantities there. If you see something you want you can order it then and pick up when you go there.
It is worth checking the Flatiron website to peruse at a leisurely pace. But, the in-store inventory is usually slightly different, as some of the very small quantity stuff (older vintages) never makes it to the website.
Has Chambers changed much with the new location and new owners?
Smaller shop, fewer bottles to see, you may also sense a slight difference in the email tone.
I haven’t done a rigorous study but I’ve seen less of David Jamie and Eben when I stop by the new shop. Although that could just be random chance.

Who bought it?
FWIW, NYC stores don’t usually store all their stocks at the store (NYC real estate pricing and all).
Of the ones listed, they all have some kind of off-site fulfillment they do.
Chambers and Crush
Flatiron as a third. Bribe with an incredible lunch
Not sure, and from what I hear the prior owners (Jamie et al) are still involved in running the new location
I recently sold a large parcel to Jamie/Chambers. It was seamless, by the way.
Greg Rubin who also owns Vanderbilt in Brooklyn and Horseneck in Greenwich, CT; the shop is in good hands.
Morrell is definitely closed until they reopen sometime next year.
