Great and very educational event. I’ll start to compile some notes and start to post some of the wines.
2017 Gros Frere Echezeaux: (non blind)
Lovely nose with pure beautiful fruit, if not the aromatic spice fireworks of the 07s. Stunningly beautiful palate with lovely texture and some structure. Long and pretty finish.
2011 Leflaive Batard Montrachet:
On the nose there was a hint of oak and lemon zest along with some white peach. Softer on the palate without as much dry extract as Pierre Vincent era wines, without the minerality and structure of chevalier or BBM; I got Leflaive immediately and guessed 2010 Leflaive batard because it was a bit rounder and little less acidic drive which was close but not quite correct.
2016 Benjamin Leroux Batard Montrachet
Struck match on the nose with flint, lemon curd, and nice acidity; initially it was a bit tight but did open up. There was a rounded mouthfeel which immediately drew us to PYCM. I was initially thinking Saint aubin, but pivoted to Criots; final guess was 2010 PYCM Criots, which was somewhat close. This was a very nice wine.
1982 Dom Perignon (not blind): From a celebrity cellar. This was beautiful, very much in keeping with the 82 we had in Atlanta. Lovely butterscotch notes along with stone fruits and crisp acidity. This had a very long finish and was drinking great.
Krug 161: first experience with this particular bottling. 2005 base. Much like the 163 this was a bit lighter bodied and had less acidity than wines like the 164 or 169. Lovely oxidative notes, the palate was stately and elegant. Long finish.
2000 Ramonet Chassagne Montrachet 1er Clos de la Boudriotte: My bring. Aromatically explosive with lovely cherry fruit and some earth, but very clean and pretty. Palate had lovely elegant filigreed texture with softer structure but immensely long finish. Guesses were all over the place, including Chambertin, Musigny, DRC, and some thoughts of 1er chambolle, mostly from 80-90s. The reveal was pretty shocking, but just indicative of how good the wine is.
2009 Grivot Clos Vougeot:
Very dense on the nose, clearly high quality. Oak and lots of structure, tight and took awhile to open up. Ultimately after a few hours open this was drinking nicely. I guessed 12/15 vosne 1er, which ultimately wasn’t that far off.
2012 Fevre Bougros
Clearly Chablis with lemon and hay on the nose, lighter bodied, beautiful texture, nice acidity, lovely wine. My guess was 2010 Fevre Vailloins.
2012 Hubert Lignier Charmes Chambertin
This was very cold upon serving. The aromatics were better a couple hours later after the wine was open. It had beautiful open knit elegant texture with cherry fruit and nice finish. I called this 15 Fourrier Mayorezes, which I guess wasn’t so bad.
2013 Charles Van Cannyet Charmes Chambertin
Some pretty fruits and a little bit of spice and earth, lovely texture on the palate, and very lovely finish. I immediately called this Hudelot Noellat 1er from Vosne, and favored beaux monts over suchots. The Charles wine from Charmes made sense, though.
1993 Faiveley Charmes Chambertin
This was a lovely wine with immediate grand cru texture and a velvet that suggested a top level producer. It was a bit hard to figure out place, so I thought about clos Vougeot; I ended up going with 99 Hudelot Noellat Clos Vougeot which wasn’t that close, this was a beautiful wine.
1999 Bouchard L’Enfant Jesus
This had pretty fruits, a lot of structure, and nice mouthfeel; I immediately thought of cote de beaune, and pommard, and guessed 2002 Armand Clos de Epeneaux which wasn’t that far off.
2011 Clos de Lambrays
Immediately morey on the nose and palate, this was pretty and drinking well. I guessed 07 Clos de Tart, which wasn’t too far off.
2015 Beaune Celebration
This had some fruit on the nose and palate, with a bit of structure, but was difficult to place. We were like “probably Jadot or something” which was the right call.
2011 Ponsot Clos de la Roche
This had beautiful aromatics, with some smoke and pretty fruits. The palate was elegant and textured and the finish was long. I was going vosne but Nick was like this was 100% Clos de la Roche which was right. We were surprised at the 2011 reveal.
2009 Chevillon Vaucrains: Flawed NR.
2009 Chevillon Les Saint Georges: one bottle was flawed, the other was very nice. A bit rustic with forest floor and savory notes. We went older morey which wasn’t that far off.
2010 Frederic Esmonin Ruchottes
A bit anonymous; perhaps not enough air; the 17 I had last month was clearly Ruchottes with high toned fruit, but this could have been from anywhere. I’m not even sure we guessed anything remotely close.
2001 Courcel Pommard Epenots
Clearly pommard; I think the vintage wasn’t super clear. Nice wine.
2013 Jean Marc Millot Suchots
A bit rustic compared to Alix’s wines, but pretty fruit with just a hint of Vosne spice. I think we called it Morey.
2013 Marchand tawse morey aux charmes
This was clearly Morey, with nice acidity.
Georges lignier (didn’t remember vineyard or vintage)
2009 Bouvier Charmes Chambertin flawed NR
1996 Jadot beaune Ursules clearly beaune, felt like it wasn’t remotely ready.
