NV Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin Champagne Brut

Curious, what do you think of VC vs. Kirkland Champagne, which is actually $20?

Last time I had VC was at least 10 years ago at some party. It didn’t leave an impression, good or bad. A few weeks ago I picked up 2 375ml bottles at $17 per bottle (blowout sale). Figured, probably worth $17. Going to try it tomorrow with a tricky pairing that usually calls for champagne.

Kirkland is even worse. Never liked the Kirkland wines. I am currently buying the Charles Heidsieck Reserve for $30 and it is off the charts amazing. Way better than the 2 put together.

We opened a Gruet blanc de blanc for my wife and daughter to make mimosas this morning, and I just finished it off this afternoon. Was very good imo. Maybe I’m weird IDK.

I had Veuve last night because someone brought it to Xmas Eve dinner. I’m not really on the hate train for Veuve and while I don’t buy it myself generally consider it to be better than the naysayers will give it credit for. With all that said, it was a disappointment. Mediocre at best and a very poor value at $60. I remember thinking this was better 2-3 years ago.

If you are using a sparkling for mimosas then it can’t be that good.

Used to be better many years ago but once a brand gets that name recognition they can charge the $60 and people will but it up. Look at Double Diamond with their wine of the year. People will think it is worth $80 or more and it is not even close to that level.

Well most of my sparklers cost north of $100, so I’m not about to use those. I’m not saying these Gruet are amazing or anything, I’m just saying that at the $13/bottle I paid they drink well and imo comparable to many bottles that I’ve had in the $30 to $40 range.

Fun thread lol

I can say, though, that I was happy to buy some CH for $30/bottle.

Paired VC with oscietra today… Great value for $17 per 375 and did not steal the show from the caviar. That said, I wouldn’t be buying for more than $30 per 750ml.

Nor should it cost more than $30 but marketing does wonders in the wine world for the average wine drinker.

I used to drink mimosas with VC when I was in college.

Sounds about right!

It was a little excessive and we saw it as decadent.

Frexinet cava is what we used for mimosas in the 1980’s.

Probably would still work today!

Ok we have a winner! Surdyk’s a once solid wine shop in Minneapolis has completely lost their mind with this gift basket for $200.00.

John…why does this not sit with you? They seemed to have curated a good diversity, perhaps a NYE gift or something that has intention for a party gift. I don’t buy VC but enough people do so arrayed with all those items, I appreciate what they’re trying to do.

Frank really? This stuff is so overpriced! I am buying NV Charles Heidsieck Reserve in MN for $29.99. Outstanding stuff. I have been the leader in promoting NV Roederer Anderson Valley Brut for years which is also far superior. I am not making much more than $100,000 a year so with two kids going to college soon my priorities are to drink the best wines for less money.

But you won’t buy the basket because you have different constraints and priorities.

Yet like the VC bicycle I posted in the photo a few weeks ago from central high desert Mexico, that is just another piece of data about how much energy the VC brand carries in many places.

I know people who’d feel honored and/or appreciated by that gift and inclusively would know that bottle of Champagne.
