NV Korbel California Champagne

Lingering in the back of the fridge since the summer, bought on the cheap to make Aperol Spritzes with. Oh well, might as well open the dreadful swill until that damn Jasud package arrives and I can bask somewhat in the glow of my own self-satisfaction.

You know what? For the money spent on this (I think it was well below $10), this is actually pretty decent. This is a solid 87 pts wine - lively, yeasty notes, lemon zest and dry fruit peel/skin. The tannins get a little more prominent as it warms up and starts to nibble at the balance sheet, and the finish is on the shorter side, but really a pretty solid low-budget sparkler. Killer QPR.

I’d serve this at a big party without any hesitation - and none would be the wiser.

Korbel Natural is a big step up for $14.

Last time I tried it, admittedly something like 6 years ago at an work related event, that lemon note presented more like hospital disinfectant.

My only TN on Korbel Brut is from 2013, and I don’t know if it’s just the time, but our notes don’t share many common descriptors.

Korbel Natural is Russian River Valley and possibly the best value sparkling wine in California.
They want to make something good, they have the resources and it’s a very unimportant part of their business.
