2000 Château Fougas Maldoror- France, Bordeaux, Côtes de Bourg (9/1/2017)
90 minute decant. Approx. 60% Merlot, 20% Cabernet and 20% Cabernet Franc.
This was part of my first ever futures purchase. In 2002, I got a list of Bordeaux Futures from a local wine shop along with Parker reviews on each one. I selected one wine from about eight Bordeaux sub-appelations that had a top predicted rating of at last 90 points and a price under $25. I splurged on Lascombes and D’Issan, which I think were in the high 20s. This was perhaps the cheapest. I think it was less that $20. This is my third bottle. After the first bottle, I asked myself “Why did I buy this?” The second bottle was getting good and now I know the answer. It has taken 17 years to get to a point where there’s nice depth, some saddle leather, a tiny bit of Bordeaux Bandaid, and nicely emerging red fruit with some earthiness and a bit of mocha. still not really ready but starting to be worth the wait. Give it another 3 years and then follow from there. Was it a good “investment?” Depends how much you give credit for knowing exactly where it’s been since it was delivered. (91 pts.)
Cool stuff. How much do you pay for storage? I assume at least $1/bottle/year, which would make it a $35+ bottle of wine now. Probably worth it, however, given your tasting note. Well-done.
There’s time value of money, there’s the fact that I make more money now so the value of a marginal dollar was much greater then, and all those other things Victor would consider. But on the other hand there’s the fact that for all those years I’ve been able to go and sit among my wines (especially the last five years or so wince we built a nice cellar room) and just look at them, which is worth a lot.
I bought a case of this on futures also. I think it was less than $15 per bottle. It was delicious. I consumed them all within 2 years. Wish I had more restraint. I love the hobbit like name.
Yeah, for me this peaked a while ago, but sounds like this had more up its sleeve than I would have guessed. I had a bottle around 2008 that was seriously good, subsequent bottles over 2009-2012 never showed nearly as well.
That’s why I bought it. Back in the olden days, pre-enlightenment, I thought that Bob was really good at picking wines so I bought this and a bunch of other “sleeper of the vintage” 2000 Bordeaux. I’ve got 30 of them left. Things like La Fleur de Jaugue, Cos Labory, Clos Rene, Cantemerle, and Grande Mayne. My splurges were D’Issan and Lascombes. In retrospect, I wish I had gone for some first growths, but finances were not so good in those days.
