Notes From a Non Wine Drinker - Oregon Edition

Recently, I hosted a tasting for some of my friends where some of them were wine nerds and others were not. I had made print outs for everyone to take notes, and what one one of my non-wine friends wrote might be some of the funniest tasting notes I have ever seen. And truthfully I thought you all would appreciate reading these.

2018 Evening Land BdB - Really liked the taste
2024 Walter Scott, La Combe Verte - Good taste
2021 Evening Land, La Source - Metallic after taste. Not big on Chardonnay
2023 Walter Scott, X Novo - Not about the taste, Didn’t like the finish
2021 Kelley Fox, Old Vine White Riesling - With sushi so fucking good. Didn’t like smell. Did like taste
2012 Montebruno, Crawford Beck - Taste grew on me with each sip
2023 Walter Scott, Sequitur - Fire. Straight gas. Idk what it is. Im about it. Fire with pasta
2022 Kelley Fox, Freedom Hill (Not Pictured) - Gas. Got that grit to it. The finish is too fire.
2013 Kelley Fox, Miribai - Smooth sailing taste. Really do be hitting

I did find it interesting that the WOTN for all of the wine people was unanimously the Walter Scott X Novo, meanwhile my buddy? That was his least favorite. Different strokes for different folks!

Started getting toasty with the yummy Riesling and it was all up hill from there. :berserker:

You read the sequence…perfectly

Awesome. This is how 80% of my own friends notes would look ngl.

I relate to those notes . . . .

This is valuable as it’s reality for 98% of the wine-drinking public

And THIS is the part of the tasting where the alcohol started to kick in lol

That’s exactly how I tell my friends about the wine I drink everyday, saving the purple prose for CT and WB notes :eyes:

Couldn’t agree more. It’s always interesting trying to use basic language to describe complex things.

When it was all said and done there were about 12 bottles for 10 people. Light compared to some other nights I’ve had, but yes we were feeling it lol

Kudos to you for opening so many top notch wines for people who may not appreciate the quality!

Thank you. I’ve been fortunate this far in my wine journey to have had people open amazing stuff for me, so I want to pay it forward and do the same for others!

Nice!

Have a friend that is nearly impossible to pick wine for because the varietal, producer, vintage, or cost doesn’t matter.

It’s completely binary: I like it or I don’t like it.

Gotta love it.

Walter Scott Sequitur is my favorite Pinot they make. I wish they made more PNs from Northern Willamette. Could see how X Novo is not pleasing to a non-wine person.

Im sitting on 3 other bottlings of WS PN that I haven’t tried yet, so Im excited to compare.

100% agree. Part of me thinks it had to do with the fact it has a lot of nuance? Not sure though.

“really do be hitting”…..nuff said. Fave tasting note of late

How did you like the Walter Scott La Combe Verte?

To be honest it was not my favorite. To me it felt very underdeveloped compared to everything else. It was super lean and high in acid but unbalanced because typically those are 2 characteristics are ones in look for in wine. Maybe I’d like it with a little more age than I had it, but for an entry level offering there’s other stuff I would look for around that price point.

Thanks. Some came into the shop the other day so I had been tempted to grab a couple.

@wbkeene: my recco is to grab a few and bury them. An outstanding wine, but needs a year or two in bottle to really shine.
