Thanks for the MG notes. Sounds like I should continue to sit on mine!
I think the 09 grand crus are drinking wonderfully right now. They’re up there with the best wines I’ve had this year in company with some very serious wines.
They were both awesome and I would argue that if you have multiples, you could open one and not be disappointed.
Agree with Brent you would not be disappointed.
I agree with Karl who agrees with Brent that you would not be disappointed. ![]()
Must resist. Must resist. Must resist…!
No reason to resist. 09s are drinking great atm, up and down the spectrum. We have opened dozens this year up to drc Richebourg, Mugnier musigny, etc and all have been great.
I love old wines and think those Mugneret-Gibourgs will be excellent old wines some day. They are delicious close-to-mature wines now and I would not hesitate in opening one if I owned them. If prioritizing, drink the '09 first (and I suspect that would be true across the portfolio of Mugneret-Gibourg in these two vintages, but we’d need some more sampling to verify
).
Cheers,
fred
I think both vintage would be fine, I’ve opened a bunch of both recently.
I really prefer their wines with a bit more age. Just finishing my 01 1ers and GCs and will probably start on the 02 1ers later this year. For me, the GCs are just so gorgeous if you can wait at least 25 years, especially in vintages like 09/10.
We had 00-02 MG clos vougeot last year and I much preferred how the 09s were drinking this year.
Trying the Clos Vougeot at both stages is certainly a real privilege. I envy you the Versatility
.
2001 Clos Vougeot was awesome last year in NY; 2009 sensational this January in NY. Palates may differ on vintage nuance, but both exceptionally beautiful.
I felt that the 00-02 Clos Vougeot were pretty wines but lacked grand cru concentration and depth. We had the pair of 09 with other serious wines that night and they clearly had another gear. Partially that may be because of improvements in winemaking as well as vintage quality.
We’re parsing hairs, but I thought the 2001 was truly a step up vs. the immediate surrounding vintages. But obviously we agree on the peak performance of the 2009s which were truly Revelatory
.
I preferred the 02 slightly; I had that just before the 01 we had at the grill. I think the 01 was a bit better than the 2000 we had the same day though, but don’t have any of those wines nearly on the same level of the 2009s. Those were up there this year with any wine I’ve had this year including the Leroy GEs, La Tache, etc that I had last weekend. I do think that the Ruchottes was a bit better than the Clos Vougeot but they were both tremendous.
