Non-traditional Thanksgiving dinners

Steve and I both dislike turkey… a lot. Last year, a Flannery rib cap (with more traditional Thanksgiving side dishes) served as our Turkey. This year, I’m thinking of making duck.

Does anyone here skip the turkey and cook something different for Thanksgiving?

You are welcome for the rib cap.

Disliking turkey “a lot” is much weirder than dissing bubbly IMO. [stirthepothal.gif]

I wish I could.

My wife and I don’t really like turkey either so we always have something else. We, too, had rib cap last year and likely will again. It sort of depends on how many people we are hosting or where we are going, too.

Have always done turkey, even if other mains were part of the meal (ham was a common suspect). I wouldn’t mind doing a whole salmon sometime.

Since you’re planning on duck, have you considered cassoulet?

I would truly be thankful for cassoulet and a good bottle of CdP! flirtysmile

So, as my kid bro and his bride are joining us for the week at chez Freemott, and since he lives in TN now, he’s bringing up a country ham.

However, that is NOT what’s for turkey day dinner. We’re doing cassoulet and CdP. The ham is for some other night that week.

CdP? This is an American holiday Chris. Ever heard of Zinfandel? [wink.gif]

Last year, my girlfriend and I did our own smaller Thanksgiving away from our families and cooked two Cornigh game hens. Worked out well. Did traditional sides.

Afterwards we participated in her families traditional yam toss…I WON!

Isn’t that what Roberto was looking for to go along with his vegan Champagne?

Smoked scallops? That sounds awesome, though I haven’t a smoker it’s something I’d love to try… and blood oranges make anything better!

My local extended family has frequently had Thanksgiving at the home of a quasi-vegetarian couple, so we rarely have turkey. One year it was seitan. A few years ago, they started eating fish so now we often have salmon.

I’ll be using my Weber Kettle to smoke them. I have an adulterated method of smoking on it…will be doing a whole salmon filet tonight as a matter of fact.

We stuff the turkey with cooked rice, chinese sausage, shitake, etc. and everyone likes the stuffing but no one likes the turkey. Will do duck or ribcap this year. Probably roast duck though. THat sounds pretty good.

Communists - you’re all communists - don’t like turkey!? It ain’t Thanksgiving if it doesn’t have a big bird on the table.

That said, I will admit that Bill’s menu looks wonderful - I have an '82 Ausone that would go great with that last course [wink.gif]
