If it’s anything like the 2012 40th Anniversary, no thanks. The Rombauer Chardonnay of Napa Cab. Residual sugar and too much new oak. Our group did taste it blind. We’ve given Alan Rath a ration of shit for it since (it’s fine, he dishes it right back). If I see blueberries, unctuous, and mocha in a tasting note for CA Cab, I go running the other way.
The only Cabs I have any real quantity of in my cellar are Ridge Monte Bello and Estate Cab. I also purchase from Cedarville Vineyards in the Sierra Foothills (Fairplay, El Dorado County). I’ve known Jonathan Lachs, the winemaker, a long time and he makes old school Cab at a very fair price.
Rombauer is polarizing tho. I think the Chard is has a lot of problems as you mentioned, but the Merlot for me is great. I think the oak is a heavy handed, but there is richness there to balance some of the oak out.
One of the local wine nerds who is a regular I sampled some Dior pinot noir which I don’t really enjoy since the oak and vanilla are crazy high… He was like you know… I’m just feeling this wine. I think he knew it wasn’t a great wine, but it was just his mood he didn’t want anything complex or sophisticated. It’s like that pop song you know is trash, but you still listen to it.
