Nice stickies and rose, plus a 1998 zin

  • 1998 Ravenswood Zinfandel Teldeschi - USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley (6/7/2009)
Nice wine and still holding on, but starting to loose that zinniness. Dried fruit on the nose. Plums and some spices on the palate. The tannins are smooth. Good finish. I’d drink these in the next two years.
  • 2007 Perry Creek Syrah Rosé - USA, California, Sierra Foothills, El Dorado County (6/7/2009)
In obvious contrast to the Donkey and a Goat, this was much drier. It’s balanced, but the other thing that stands out is that it’s big. Nothing delicate about this rose. Jolly Rancher watermelon on the nose and some flowers. More brooding on the palate with red fruits and maybe pomegranate. Good finish.
  • 2008 A Donkey and Goat Grenache Gris Isabel’s Cuvée McDowell - USA, California, North Coast, McDowell Valley (6/7/2009)
Served maybe a tad too warm. But very nice. Quite delicate on both the nose and the palate. Strawberry and maybe some sea spray on the nose. On the palate, the sweetness really stood out in comparison to the Perry Creek rose. Strawberry and watermelon on the palate and a little bit of minerality. Excellent.
  • N.V. McGuigan Shiraz Private Reserve Tawny Port - Australia, South Eastern (6/7/2009)
Nice. Not overly complex. Balanced. Maybe toffee on the nose. Darker fruits and caramel on the palate. Average finish. If the price was right I"d buy this again. Imported by Stevenot Imports.
  • 1983 Royal Oporto (Real Companhia Velha) Porto Vintage - Portugal, Douro, Porto (6/7/2009)
Heavy, heavy alcohol on the nose after it was first opened. Way out of balance. Probably needs to be decanted. With much swirling it came more into balance. Generally simpler, with darker sweet fruits. Was still improving last time I tried it so I couldn’t really tell how good it was, but it matched fine with chocolate. Imported by Joseph Douglas Wine.
  • 1964 Justino Henriques Madeira Boal - Portugal, Madeira (6/7/2009)
Excellent nose. One of those you could stand in the corner and huff all night. Lots of candy in the nose, like caramel and toffee. The taste as like a whole dessert course. Creme brulee and nice spices. Sweet but still balanced. Incredible finish. Delicious. Glenn brought this. Imported by Wine Marketing Ltd.
