Next restaurant. A different opinion. (review posted now)

I went last night to the childhood menu. It was my first time at Next.

Put me down as someone who just doesn’t emotionally respond to this kind of cooking.

As dinner theatre, it wins hands down.

As an illustration of what a chef can do to entertain with fancy culinary tricks, it wins.

It was a 4 hour meal. During the meal I had to draw a stick figure on a plate with balsamic reduction in an Elmer’s glue bottle, among other things.

I found some of the food appealing; most of it was for show but not something to which I emotionally responded.

I very much appreciate those who love the type of work the kitchen is doing here. It just doesn’t work for me.

Wilfred - Completely understand your feelings. Next IMO is a concept some of which i like some of which I don’t. Personally, I don’t want to go to a fine dining restaurant where diners are dressed up in costume as happened with Paris 1906 and I have heard Childhood. The restaurant although very capable of serious food loses some of its polish with the way it is marketed. The ticket frenzy and all the social media drive the average age of the restaurant in to the 20s. Although there is nothing wrong with this it might be unexpected for those looking for a fine dining experience.

George

I would have loved a 4 hour experience…

going to Alinea next month. Can’t wait for that.

Alinea is in a class by itself.

Phenomenal.

He is a great dining companion, upon finally saying a word to the people next to him.
