Next of Kyn

Just had a 2015 bottle of Next of Kyn and was blown away. Lots of visuals. Anyone manage a visit to the winery? I understand it’s generally closed to the public, just curious to hear if anyone has made it inside and if so, how?

I beleive that Sine Qua Non accepts very limited visitors, like media only.

What do you mean by that? I haven’t heard that expression in regard to wine.

Glad you had such a good experience. I’ve never had it.

Also, how do you pronounce Kyn? Like kin?

I kinda assumed OP was a synesthesiac, which would be wild as a wine lover!

I’ve always assumed “kin,” as it’s related to SQN and followed it as a label, I believe.

Is it more or less expensive than SQN?

When I drink wine, my sensory experience can include visuals, random memories, etc. I think it’s a form of synesthesia.

Yes! I believe I have synesthesia responses to wine sometimes, not always. It has to be good and I have to be paying attention.

I take a sip of Caymus, and I see the refrigerated drink window at 7-11.

If my drinking experiences were like this I’d drink more.

Maybe you’re not drinking enough

Sally, to your original question, I don’t think they do public tastings. However, Manfred (who started SQN and NoK) is an artist, he would say first and foremost, I believe. Lots of history re the labels and such of SQN on… someone’s blog (@Ken_Zinns?). Anyway… all of that to say, it might be worth an email. “Hi, I’m an oenological synesthesiac” is a great pick-up line for an artist who makes wine! :berserker:

Although Grape-Nutz is not my own website and I didn’t write this piece (Eric Anderson wrote it - he founded the Grape-Nutz site and continues to run it), it may be of interest although it’s nearly 20 years old now:

I’ll take your tip as a sign and send the wine maker my poem/review I wrote upon tasting the 2015. If he likes it, maybe I’ll get invited.

As payment for my brilliant idea (ha!), I kindly request that you post the poem/TN here for us all to enjoy!

I will post it but I have to wait for a couple pending items first. I imagine later this month I’ll be able.

Interesting that you mention SQN and synesthesia. Are you aware that Maggie Harrison, who was asst winemaker at SQN and now has her own delicious Lillian wines, has synesthesia? She mentioned that she can keep 150 different wines separate in her head by the colors, etc.

Yes, I knew she has synesthesia and that hers is classic in that it presents the same output each time the sensory input is presented. I’m envious of that since my synesthesia is rather unpredictable. I also am familiar with her wine and it is insanely delicious. Oddly enough, hers are some of the easiest for me to identify blind. I did not know she was able to catalog 150 wines by color alone! I would find it hard to come up with that many colors. Do you know her process?

I used to love her wines when I was drinking that style.

Actually, in re-reading this article, she seems to assign numbers to flavors, and the numbers have the colors. Cheers!
