Good friend and serious foodie is hitting NYC for first time.
Would love ideas for both high end dinners and great neighborhood options
I haven’t been sans my 9 year old twins in one time so my history is dated
Thanks
Jeff

Yeah, there are a ton of NYC threads with a great many recommendations at all price levels. One thing I always recommend because it is so unique is a trip to East Houston for stops at Russ and Daughters and Katz’s. The former is unlike anything else on the planet; the best smoked fish of any kind anywhere. Many different kinds of lox, sable, trout etc. A true NY experience and out-of-this-world delicious. A block away is Katz’s, which may be the quintessential NY Jewish deli. The corned beef is just ok, in my view, but the pastrami is as good as it gets anywhere, and the theater is unmatched.
Russ and Daughter’s is amazing. A trip there results in a 3 hour shopping spree shared between R&D and the Whole Foods beer shop a few blocks to the west.
Even when R&D is a bit busy, the guys behind the counter seem to enjoy answering questions and making everyone as happy as they can. Indicating early that a tip will be given is a helpful too.
If you go there, you are only a couple of blocks from the tenement museum. It is absolutely fascinating
Add in Laborio di Gelato and you have a great trifecta.
Had a great experience at Marea in June. Can’t wait to go back in August when I am in NYC for business.
I was just there last week with my kids. They were in amazement, watching the theater. For those that don’t want to be part of the theater, one side of the deli is sit down/waiter service as opposed to waiting in line/ “fighting” to place your order (which is part of the experience IMO The brisket was amazing, the corned beef very good and the chopped liver fantastic.
+1 = tenement museum. Been there 4-5 times and always a wonderful experience.
I probably eat lunch at Katz’s at an average of once-a-month. Although I’m a bit jaded by the “theater”, the pastrami-on-rye continue to remain as one of the better ones, if not the best, in NYC. It’s always served fresh, warm, moist and fatty, plus it’s a quick good-feeling and quickly-served hearty lunch. I usually add a hot dog when I’m in the mood for pigging-out.
