New York City Restaurants

Rockmeisha is reopened on 14th street for about two years now. The vibe is definitely not the same as the Barrow St. version which is a bit of a bummer, but if you are at the bar still a good time and the food is pretty much the same.

I hate lobbing recommendation bombs over to city-specific forums, but here I go anyway  (feel free to ignore)… I’m trying to triangulate reviews and recs for an Omakase/a la carte sushi experience between here, Eater, Sushi Legend, and others… just coming in for a weekend in July, and I’m wondering about a few places that don’t seem to get much discussion here (I’m assuming because some are a bit ho-hum/corporate?). I’m looking for under $400 per person before alcohol, and my wife and I appreciate variety and inventiveness, but would like a place that highlights quality Edomae. Before I go crazy trying to snag reservations in our narrow window, are any of these discouraged or particularly encouraged (love any other recommendations also)? We’ll just do one sushi dinner since there is so much more to explore.

  • Takeda
  • Sushi Ishikawa
  • Kosaka
  • Sushi Mumi
  • Tsubame
  • Ikumi
  • Mitsuru - I believe this is new and associated with Parcelle?

Yes! The only one here that I can dutifully recommend from your list is Sushi Ikumi - I have been many times. Jeong-san is very friendly, is always improving, and the atmosphere is casual and warm. The price is great (and is even better for lunch on Saturdays at $150).

Sushi Mumi would be the other from your list that I would consider as I sent a friend there who enjoyed it and I know one person who is a regular there.

I would stay away from Takeda (overpriced and not that good), Ishikawa (not edomae), and Kosaka (heard it has fallen significantly since the original Sushi Legend review). All I remember about Tsubame is that a friend said it was a weird concept (kaiseki and sushi hybrid) and that the neta were average.

The only three places I really go to anymore are Sushi Sho (way above your price), Icca (excellent but above your price), and Sushi Ikumi. I used to go to Shion 69 Leonard a lot but it’s expensive, the service is bad, and I got bored of it.

New York City has undergone a hustle at the ā€œbudgetā€ end and the expensive places keep getting more expensive.

I would consider a splurge for a top tier and very memorable sushi restaurant, but I feel like I’d be more comfortable with that if I had more experience with the NYC sushi scene first. I currently don’t really have a frame of reference, so perhaps next time!

Thanks so much for the recommendations!

Try lunch at Omakase by Maaser:

Both Chefs worked at Masa and I think it is the best $125 sushi experience in NYC.

Has anyone eaten at Demo recently? Thoughts?

Not recently but I loved it when I did go four or so months ago.

Thanks S.Pimp. Going in 2 weeks for the first time and quite excited

Just got significantly more excited for my trip to NY next week. Resy Notify came through!

It will be my first time, after attending their cookbook release pop-up in San Francisco, and spending the subsequent several months cooking through the book. Can’t wait.

Other spots we’ve booked:

  • Kabawa
  • SUPERBUENO
  • Noortwyck
  • Clemente Bar
  • Bar Contra

Should be a tasty few days!

curious, when was the last time you ate here? i walked by not long ago on a weekend during prime time and it seemed dead inside.

Maybe 6 months ago. It is strangely always quiet.

That is a great list! If you are doing dinner at 4H. Hit nightmoves afterwards. It is right next store.

Has this been posted anywhere yet?

Thank you so much for the rec!! We are doing dinner, but alas it’s on Monday and it seems like they’re closed that night.

Just dined at Noortwyck. Enjoyable.

Went to Kabawa last night! So fun and tasty. It also helps that the list is priced as if we were still pre-pandemic

What did you end up choosing? It seems like the cuisine might be best suited to a riesling, or perhaps white burgundy?

We had a both! A 14 Roulot, 21 Donhoff Kabinett. Started with a 05 Bereche Cote that was killer.

buddy in town and we were planning on trying ha’s snack bar once and for all until the nytimes thing came out. i dreaded a long line (which i dont do) but he was 4th in line at 530 and we were seated by 545 inside.

we loved it. yes, the counter space is small. yes, the staff do a masterful job of putting the dishes out quickly but not rushing you either. yes, the wine list was small and natty and meh (we picked a pied chenin from baptise cousin for $85).

but the vibe was solid and bustling, the staff were kind, on point and friendly and the food…impressive.

best dishes were the salad of herbs and shallots and the seafood vol au vent…followed up by the eggs mayonnaise. the petite crevettes were meh and honestly i was disappointed by the tamarind butter escargot. much prefer the garlic ones at pastis.

we split everything including a cherry crumble for dessert. after tip, pretty close to $300 for the two of us so it certainly adds up but i left relatively sober, full but not awful and very impressed.
