New York City Restaurants

Eyval was fantastic! Definitely returning. All the flavors are so bright and clear, and the food is as luxuriant as Persian food can be. The air outside the restaurant thrums with the scent of saffron. Just so good. Favorites were the fava bean borani with dill and smoked trout roe, the oft-mentioned lamb ribs, the tahdig with insane tomato/pomegranate sauce, and the octopus kabab with the most delicious and caressing spiced tahini with preserved lemon. And that saffron ice cream sandwich! Wow. We brought 2017 Brisset Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeot and 1993 Peyre Rose Clos des Cistes, which were good pairs.

So happy you liked it. It is the restaurant in NYC that I most want to return to.

Family’s out of town so I popped into Theodora as a walk-in. My second superb and exciting dinner in a row (Eyval yestrerday) - I feel like @Robert_Dentice !

Wow is the food good! I had the hiramasa with lime, dashi, and avocado; the wood-fired greens; and the steelhead trout with tzatziki and roasted kale. Each dish was stunningly delicious, I practically licked the plates clean. There was a certain sameness as each had a similar flavor profile balanced between smoky wood oven notes, zippy acids from citrus or vinegar, and creamy saucing, but it was all so good there’s no way to complain.

Looking for suggestions for a celebratory (hs graduation) dinner with an 18 and 20 year old on a sunday night. Wine not important. Kids would love to go to places like Torrisi, Don Angie, or the Corner Store but I assume reservations will be impossible. Probably staying at the Bowery, so ideally in that general part of the city. Was considering The Grill, but appears to be closed on sundays.

Any suggestions appreciated! Thank you!

Claud or Foul Witch are close to where you are staying.

Pasquale Jones is a bit more casual but very good.

Ci Siamo is further afield but great food.

My recent week in NYC with mostly family dinners

Chote Nawab -above average Indian restaurant on Curry Hill. Some chaats and chicken dishes, all great.

Pasquale Jones - great for families and the braised leeks and spring pea salad were exceptional, as were artichoke stuffed shells. Shrimp great, but heirloom carrots undercooked.

Marea- as good as ever. Appreciate their wines BTG choices.

Ci Siamo - very good - 3 of 4 pastas excellent. Beware if going with a party if 5, they will put you on a four top. We succeeded on moving to more comfortable table but not with out effort.

Penny’s - awesome seafood. Stool seating only, very tight getting in and out.

I’m surprised at the Ci Siamo comment. They’re fine with 4s and 6s. I guess they don’t know what to do with 5.

It was worse than a normal squeeze of 5 in a four top. The banquette curved in and crowded the 5th person.

Pasquale Jones was even worse in what they first offered. A curved booth for four (imo) and someone would have had the sharp corner of their curved booth in their back. But they were easier to get a table change and great thereafter.

some ideas in the same vein:

Casino
Jean’s
Raf’s
Lucien
Il Buco Alimentari
Emmet’s on Grove

Great variety on the bev list, but overpriced.
Food, kinda the same, yummy, but everything is just a touch dear. Black salsa that comes with the Guac is phenomenal. Uni/bone marrow thing is yummy, but a touch too smooth texturally. Carrot pizza by a different name inventive. Steak is tasty, but socks firmly on.
