New York City Restaurants

I saw that. Didn’t know the history of the new owners. Such a cool, storied spot. Not sure if John is still running the wine program. He’s one of the nicest I’ve met ITB.

had dinner at smithereens last night. was quite enjoyable and a place i can see returning to regularly. brought a bottle of ganevat (friendly corkage at $35) and they provided josephine hutte glassware.

scallops, leeks, sunchokes, halibut…cheese plate and donut…all solid.

even spotted @Greg_K there.

Ate at Ernesto’s last night. Last minute thing…drove my kid into NYC to meet friends. Had some inkind $ that I wanted to use.

I’m a fan of the restaurant under very specific conditions which were mostly met last night. It’s a heavy meal. Not many lighter items on the menu. On a cold, rainy night, the menu worked for us.

We had a few pintxos…Gilda’s and Jamon Croquettes. Then shared a bay scallop and chrone appetizer. I had the rabbit with bomba rice and my wife had the veggie entree.

My issues are it’s very loud in there…all stone and metal and it echos. And the wine list (for me) absolutely blows. Ended up with a martini and a glass of 2023 Envinate Benje Blanc.

Fun night.

Haha, we stopped by to see if we could get a drink after Foxface, but there were a few too many of us. I’ve been a few times, it’s great, highly reccomended.

Wonderful Lunch at Gabriel Kruther. Beautiful space. Michelin level service that delivers at its level. Food is great. Deep wine list; for sure the most Alsace I’ve seen on one list in the US.

Tried Field Guide last night - a new spot in Williamsburg. Great grower list with the most reasonable markups I’ve seen since moving here a few months ago (and I’ve had lots of markup shock). We sat at the bar and enjoyed talking with the fellow wine geeks about the Bereche and Michel Fallon bottles we got. I will definitely go back.

Thank you, I had not heard of it. Great wine list. I wonder how long it will last. Looks like an opening list where they have 1 or 2 bottles of everything. I hope it does last. How was the food?

It was enjoyable, but we only had a few dishes because we went for the champagne. The wine director seemed motivated to keep the cellar strong. I hope it sticks around!

Gotta love any place holding vintages of all three Peyre Rose red cuvées.

That’s one hell of a list for that location. Very impressive.

I guess that rules you out as a possible consignor! Have been wondering who is behind the Riesling section as a restaurant having the VDP auction wines at all (let alone at those prices) is rare.

Just added: NYC: Wine Beserker Take Over at Skin Contact: December tbd - Event Planner - Online or Offline - WineBerserkers

Please respond there if interested.

Love that place and love Eben, but I’ll be exiled to San Diego until February. Have fun!

Good luck with exile. Sure you will return in glory!

Very sadly, Ugly Baby is closing its doors in December. One of my favorite Thai restaurants for the past 7 years.

It is very sad! I’m excited to try Kru next week and always find myself at Thai Diner. Any other recs for Thai food?

i’m a big thai diner fan, but i’ve had pretty good experiences at fish cheeks
somtum der is really quite good but i always seem to order too spicy there!

I like Untable, which is also in Carroll Gardens Brooklyn., just down the street from Lucali’s pizza. It opened a year or so ago and is run by a group who previously worked at Ugly Baby.

Have you tried Little Myanmar? Not Thai, rather Burmese food with some similarities. It is a hole in the wall in the EV and open all day. Free corkage! But they only have 4 seats.

I’ll have to try this out! Love to add another spot to the corkage free list as well…
