New York City Restaurants

Thanks! My hearing just got canceled so now the trip is off. C’est la vie. Thanks everyone for the recs. I’ve been meaning to try Aska.

Had a tremendously good meal at The Four Horsemen last night. The menu is actually a bit difficult for me (moreso my dining companions, wife and daughter) right now. Even so, it was a wonderful time. Started with the Spring Lettuces with Pickled Ramps, Japanese Madai with citrus, and the Beef Tendon Salad with Favas.

This is my second time seeing the beef tendon on the menu and just saying it is a turn off. That said, we love favas and the tendon is layered on the bottom of the dish like prosciutto. I think I will pass on the tendon if I see it again, it’s a bit slimy and chewy, but the favas were outstanding.

Next was the Chickpea Crepe and the Asparagus salad. I’m not a huge fan of asparagus and this was one of the best preparations I’ve ever had.

Next was the Yellowfin Tuna with Sesame in Brown Butter. Seared on one side, raw on the other. Delicious. Last course was the Spinach Tonnarelli with Burrata.

Wines were 2022 Susan Esteban Vinyle (Portugal) and the 2022 Yura L’Abeille et Le Papillon Pinot Blanc (Alsace) that were recommeded by our fantastic server, Will.

Anyone get invited to the Foxface Natural Birthday Party on June 9 via email?? I’ll be there around noon!

"Dear Friends,

It’s hard to believe we’ve been around for a year already. All four seasons with their fishes and produce, the wonderful people who catch and grow them, our terrific chef who can come up with a dish on his subway ride downtown because someone brought in gorgeous clams and asparagus, but most importantly all the lovely people we got to host! (that’s you)

We thought about celebrating our birthday with a fancy tasting menu dinner but that’s not really us, so instead we decided to give most of the team a day off and make it a party. Standing room only with plenty of wines by the glass, oysters, charcuterie (We bet you never had water buffalo cecina or kangaroo lonza before) and a few other surprises. We’ll be around all day from 12 pm to 10 pm and we’ll be thrilled if you can join us.

Please RSVP below - it will help us manage our wine chilling and glass polishing.

(you will need to use the Resy app or login via your Resy account to view availability)"

5 tickets left for 12-4pm, 10 tickets left for 7-10pm. 4-7pm sold out.
Your Resy account needs to be enabled for the event - maybe if you’ve been 2+ times?

A bit warm for that, no? I consider that a cold weather dish (like cassoulet).

Nah. Room temp with a frisée salad with black truffle vinaigrette and some Krug rose ?

Perfect!

Le Coucou also has it on the menu, although I have not had theirs.

You might be right, but first time I had it, for real, was at the farmer’s market in Beaune. Early August. So my association is with warmer weather.

Back from a week-long trip to NYC, ate pretty well throughout

Omakase Room by Maaser, already mentioned upthread. Wine list is very limited, nonetheless this was the most memorable meal of our trip, don’t miss it. Seriously.

Aquavit we did the tasting menu. Service and ambiance is outstanding, food was excellent, but both of found it rather unmemorable, nothing really stood out. Nice experience, but I expected something more.

La Pizza & La Pasta - Eataly - late lunch at the Flatiron location. My god are you people lucky to have this shrine of Italian fare! What a place! Delightful lunch, clean classic flavors, very enjoable.

Katz Deli - I only ever order the pastrami here, and it was outstanding as always. Prices are sure up, and I still couldn’t finish, though I sure as hell tried. Wife ordered the brisket, and we were both a bit disappointed, good flavor but a bit too dry.

Nobu - lively, energetic place, outstanding service. We did the Omakase with the wine/sake pairing, Everything was outstanding, but we both agreed we enjoyed the Sushi experience listed above more

Manhatta - A group event with the conference I was attending, 60th floor of 28 Liberty St. - what views! We were in a private room with a fixed menu, so not a “typical” experience here, but the food was all very, very good. But the views…

Le Gratin - very, very good. I can see why they are known for the gratin potatoes, delish! I had the special of the night, which was essentially steak with morels/sauce, which was outstanding. Steak tartar to start with no slacker either.

We (my family of three) went to Monsieur Vo tonight 100% due to your great writeup. We had the quail, the shrimp mini-pancake, and kohlrabi salad starters, and the Tofu Luc Lac and Beef Shank mains. It was delicious and, really, the shank is a main for way more than three people! I quite enjoyed the quail and salad, sort of liked the mini-pancake (don’t bother), and really, really enjoyed the tofu and shank. We took home what must be 1.5 pounds of beef home - not complaining. The $125 price for the shank feels steep but it’s so much food - share this with a party of six!

Btw this was the beef shank.

Very intrigued by this spot. I love quail.

The quail is crisp and chewy and flavorful, especially with the salt/pepper. I don’t mind getting my hands dirty for dishes like this.

To each his own, but if a restaurant placed that on my table, I’d walk out the door.
