New York City Restaurants

Wine wise we grabbed the Gamet BdN and when I tried ordering the rieslings Robert mentioned they steered me towards the Knoll, so we went with that.

Food wise, we tried everything. The Scallop, sea urchin, and Pork belly were outstanding.
The halibut while tasty, just seemed too delicate with the rest of the meal. The lamb, for me, was a miss.

The fried chicken is also a great add-on.

Glad to hear about Yoshino. It has been on my list but I haven’t yet had the chance. Seems like it’s pretty hard to find a reservation.

How is the wine list?

Small, good in terms of quality, but VERY expensive. Excellent high end Sake section.

Ate at Shmone over the weekend. It’s not worth getting into the specifics, but it was one of the worst restaurant experiences I’ve ever had… both the food and the service were terrible. It’s sad, because I loved North Abraxas in Tel Aviv, and had hopes that this would be in the same vein.

Exactly my feeling, I thought everything was great except the halibut which seemed out of place (and subdued vs bold).

A similar experience at Jua, one of my other favorites. Everything dynamite except the sous vide chicken, which was delicate and bland.

Highlights of my August time in NYC

Jua

Rezdora (so consistently perfect pasta)

Chola for traditional Indian. The Murgh Burrah Kebab and the chaats were super, the chicken tikka masala a little tame. The Murgh Burrah was worthy of going just to return, not really a Kebab but two large stuffed chicken breasts from the tandoori, with some unique spicing

Le Pavillon - so big it has to be corporate to survive, first two courses of the three worthy of Daniel’s flagship, the desert was ok.

Bar Room of the Modern - super as always. The restaurant week menu in not a dumb subset. We ordered three between the two of us and made it a tasting menu.

Il Posto Accanto - not up to my expectations, I’ve had too much great pasta this summer. Good for a neighborhood place.

Gelato at Venchi was the real deal and very tasty, as was Il Figo.

Sorry you did not like Il Posto Accanto more. I know how frustrating it is to use up a meal slot even for a decent meal.

As I mentioned it is a good neighborhood spot that is also open seven days a week for lunch which is valuable to me because so many places are either not open for lunch or closed Monday / Tuesday.

I know there are some other fans here as this thread put it on my radar.

as fall approaches i’m starting to think of all the things i love eating in the city
before getting on the train to come home i liked to stop at a maison kayser and get some of those jamon et fromage baguettes
since kayser is gone, can i get some recc’s for something similar, or even better!

No worries, it was fun, and enjoyed the neighborhood for our post prandial walk. Better than what is local to me, just not like Rezdora or Via Carota.

Could have been August doldrums too. Simple pastas we’re fine, protein quality was a little short on the seafood pasta (or quantity in case of the sea urchin, none detectable in the sauce and only a single sushi sized portion on top).

Try one of Julien Boulangerie baguette. Imo, a couple of notches higher than Kayser’s (NYC versions).
Fwiw, we get ours from the UES location.

Do you recall if there was a corkage fee?

Yes I recall. $50 per bottle.

for all the altamarea group fans out there, today only (8/31) the group is offering a complimentary gift card for each one purchased $200 and above.
buy one for 300 get a free one for 300 etc up to $1k i think
pretty remarkable imo

That’s good to know, I’ll be in NYC for most of September near their UES location, can’t wait to try it. I really miss the old Kayser (we soothed our sad palates by going to their location in Paris as it was close to our Airbnb).

i was in LA for a week and see Robert posting all of these great places there…and then see him posting all of these great places here…he’s like restaurant batman.

have a birthday coming up and going to see pavement in brooklyn. looking for a nice place for dinner. assuming fradei would be the go-to pick? do they allow corkage? any other ideas for something new(ish)?

the only places that i really enjoy are solid neighborhood spots. this summer, altro paradiso, cervos, rolos, bar bete and ingas were the only places i really enjoyed.

Love Restaurant Batman!

Check on the format for Fradei they said they would be taking a break from their tasting menu format in September. I love the place and sure whatever they do will be great.

Need an update. Going in Dec to NYC. Where to stay and where to eat. Le Bernardin—Will try but can’t do res till Nov 1 for Dec. Where to stay in Manhattan? Where to eat? Haven’t been in 20 years.

Have you read this whole fantastic thread and still need advice on where to eat? Honestly, there’s almost nowhere worth eating in NY that isn’t discussed here, and it’s current and up to date. And personally you couldn’t pay me to eat at Le Bernardin.

Thought Bernadin to be a must. I’ve only looked at last page or two due to entry dates. Will listen to the scolding and peruse further. Thanks.
