New York City Restaurants

Thanks. Been there years ago and liked their choucroute. I didn’t know they offer(ed) cassoulet. Definitely on my radar now. Do you know if byob/corkage allowed?

Haven’t been lately but I think it was something like $35 for corkage a couple of years back

Had dinner at Le Bernardin last night - we had recently had lunch there, but wanted to try them for dinner. I can only say that I was really surprised by how much better dinner was relative to the meal we had for lunch. Very happy we went back.
Started with white negronis. Then ordered the 4 course prix fixe meal.
After the cocktails we moved to wine, ordering a glass of NV Roederer and a glass of 2018 Latour Meursault.
We had the oysters with the champagne and the Kampachi with the Latour - both first courses were very good.
For the second course we both had the Latour and we had the Tasmanian Sea Trout and the Shellfish medley.
For our mains, I went with a 2012 Tondon Rioja and had the surf and turf, they had the Halibut with a glass of 2020 mainque chardonnay from Patagonia.
For dessert we had the milk chocolate hazelnut and the baba au rhum. Both very delicious.
We had two different flavors of rochelt eau de vie - the muscat and the cherry.

The food was delicious - servings were generous - and we didnt leave hungry at all.
the oysters were a standout as well as the surf and turf - the “turf” portion was a oxtail cannelloni which was very very good.

I would go back for dinner as soon as I was able.

I have reservations at Per Se on Tuesday next week, so it’s going to be interesting comparing the two.

The 63 Clinton Resy page sez:

Cannot accommodate vegan dietary needs at this time, we sincerely apologize. Vegetarian and Pescatarian can be accommodated.

I’m hosting a couple of my Italian producers, in town this week for Slow Wine. I reserved Wu’s Wonton for Tuesday before realizing it’s start of Chinese New Year. I’m concerned it might be equivalent to going out on Valentines Day. Plus, no pigs available.

I would consider alternative downtown spots that are casual, modestly to moderately priced, reasonable corkage and open Tuesday dinner for 8-10 people. It CAN’T be Italian.

Nominations graciously welcomed.

Hey Greg, along the same lines you can go to Peking Duck House (they have locations in midtown and Chinatown). Another one that comes to mind is Noreetuh - they have a private room that would accommodate your party. There is no corkage fee on Sunday otherwise it’s $30 and limited to two bottles. But for a large group, I’d call and ask about bringing more bottles, they’re very friendly.

I appreciate the thoughts Pedro. I considered PDH but the new year concerns apply there too. Noreetuh is closed Tuesdays.

Mike Pobega used to host dinners at North Square. Private room in the back

We ate at Jungsik this weekend – the food was very good (the sea bass with shishitos and yuzu kosho, in particular), the service was friendly, and they were accommodating of food preferences. Despite needing to close outdoor seating last minute due to the snowstorm, parties had plenty of space inside.

On balance, I think we preferred a recent meal at Atera, but would happily return to both.

I’m planning to be in New York next week for a bit of a bacchanalian thing and have made reservations at Ops, Torien, Gem, and Aquavit as a direct result of reading through a whole bunch of posts in this thread. Also going to visit Tempura Matsui and Le Coucou (this last one for old time’s sake). Thank you all

Stunning meal at Atomix. Best meal out of ~10 visits. I would not be surprised if they move up to three stars if they can keep this up.

I agree with you. The service I’ve received there has been the best in the city.

Agree wholeheartedly–if they are “only” a 2-star, I can’t imagine what 3 would be. We had yet another epic meal there in late December and can’t wait to return (we come to NY each year in late December) and will be bringing friends who’ve never been. Can’t wait for them to experience it!

Couldn’t agree more–it is at another level. Truly extraordinary

Has anyone here been to Saga yet? It’s the newish restaurant from the same chef as Crown Shy but on the 63rd floor of the building. It got a great review from Eater and I’m looking to go, but wanted to see if anyone had a first hand opinion.

Also, they don’t post their wine list online so would be curious if anyone knows what the list is like and opinions on the pairing option. Thanks!

Ask them to email you a copy.

Been twice. Along with crown shy, I don’t know of another restaurant(s) that has higher variance. When on it is truly excellent. When off it is very disappointing. It definitely seems to help if you go with someone who is a PX there. Given that it seems like most high end kitchens in NYC nowadays seem to be off their A-game, maybe its worth a flier?

Might be a bit dated, but wine list when they opened was deep but a bit all over the place (vintages and selections). there were pockets of value here and there particularly in the champagne section (GC for 250, cristal for 4-something).

Since it is a little gnarly out this weekend, wanted to mention some delivery places perfect for this weather: Cocoron, Ho Foods, Suki [cheers.gif]

We had very good experiences at Le Coucou, Aquavit, Torien, and Ops. Apparently we were sat next to the proprietors of Atomix when we went to Le Coucou on Monday. We only found out because we chatted with Daniel Rose and he told us about the restaurant. Will have to try on our next trip!

Le Bernardin was disappointing. I’m really gutted because I’ve been coming for so long [swearing.gif]

Nice list. Elia and Chef JP (owners of Atomix) are absolutely wonderful people.
