New Year's Eve Wines: Selosse Initial & 97 Giacosa Le Rocche

  • 1997 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Le Rocche del Falletto di Serralunga d’Alba - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo (12/31/2016)
Decanted for three hours. Bricky red hue with a scarlet edge. Nose of musk, camphor, cherry, strawberry blossom, tar, and soy. Energetic layers of scintillating dark cherry, strawberry, blue plum, asphalt, resin, and earth on the palate. Softened texture hiding firm tannin. Bright acidity. Long, long finish of tarry red fruit with earthy grip and feathery fade-out. Brilliant with mushroom risotto. (93 pts.)
  • NV Jacques Selosse Champagne Initial - France, Champagne (12/31/2016)
Disgorged December 11, 2014. White golden color. Nose of yeasty baking spice, pear, almonds, white flowers, flint. Big and bready on the palate with notes of biscuit, parmesan, grapefruit, apple core, and tons of satisfying grip. Nicely acidic with nubby, massaging texture. Long finish of energizing fizz, flint, citrus, and yeasty bite. Terrific Champagne. (93 pts.)
