New Orleans - Solo Diner

Gonna be in NOLA early next week and have Monday and Tuesday evenings free. I have Tuesday and Wednesday lunch free as well. Looking for some fun places to eat and drink as a solo diner. Suggestions please.

I’d make sure to get in a visit to Acme for some BBQ oysters at least once.

Try Cochon butcher for lunch - near convention ctr. Dinner really depends on what you like.

I’ll add that if you’re feeling somewhat casual, Cochon is a tasty dinner spot as well. You may need a reservation, though.

Despite some unfavorable reviews on Yelp recently for their dinner service or…“regular” menu, Dooky Chase’s lunch buffet is both terrific and more representative of the classic New Orleans creole/soul food than any of the more modern places. I would head back to that buffet in a second…and am thinking of doing so in August.

I am not as big a fan as others of the star chefs’ mini-empire restaurants like Donald Link’s and John Besh’s (and, I guess Emerils). I like the one-off, longstanding type of places, warts and all: Dooky Chase, Galatoire…and others. They last and last for a reason.

Had numerous excellent dishes for lunch at La Petite Grocery back in feb.
They are really firing now. I’d go back there in a second.
Good cocktails and wine list, too.
Cochon is solid, as Dennis said above, go next door to the “butcher” for more casual lunch.
Galatoire is always great.
Jacques Imos can be fun, though maybe not solo.
Get an oyster po boy at Domilese’s!
So much great food in that city.

Another vote for La Petite Grocery. You can sit at the bar. Have the crab beignets.

Bar at R’evolution
Bar at Sylvain
Bar at Lucky Rooster
Bar at Emerils
Lunch at the bar at Herbsaint

so many choices!!!

R’evolution would be a great choice also. Herbsaint for lunch would be a definite for me although bar is kind of small.

I second Butcher, Lucky Rooster and Bar @ Revolution… Mas Arepas is also fantastic for lunch.

FYI for those who have been to butcher in past, they recently renovated and opened a large expansion. So no longer fear the hour + line just to eat a fantastic sandwich (they have a full bar now as well).

I’m a local who lives downtown, feel free to Pm for more insight.

Just got back from lunch at Cochon Butcher! Wow! The Muffaletta was outstanding. The Mac and cheese was overkill.

Dinner last night at August was excellent. The beet and crab salad was superb and the trout pontrachain was very enjoyable as well.

Lunch today at Cochon. Wow! Wood grilled oysters with garlic chili butter and rabbit and dumplings. Tried the ribs and smoked ham hock too.

Waddled over to Cafe du Monde for iced chicory coffee. That place is fun, but living on reputation. Beignets were ok, not that hot and a bit rubbery. I’m not a coffee drinker, so not that qualified to critique, but it was okay.

Dinner tonight at La Petite Grocery. Tomorrow lunch at Peche but open to change it. Dinner at Arnauds for work so no choice.

A mistake to not try a few BBQ’d oysters at any of the Acme’s

A mistake to eat Acme’s grilled oysters when Drago’s is open.

+1

I had a great solo lunch last week at Mr B’s Bistro. Friendly and effortless service. I had the house salad, gumbo ya ya, a fat and delicious crab cake and the warm bread pudding with whisky cream sauce. They have cocktail specials at very fair prices. I had three of their $3 pear vodka cosmos. Under $60 all in.

I sat at table 61 which is a banquette two top with a view of the whole room.

We were at Mr B’s in March for lunch. They squeezed 8 of us into a table for 6 at our request so we wouldn’t have to wait. Food, drinks, and service were excellent and the prices were good.

La Petite Grocery was an amazing meal. The blue crab beignets may have been the best thing that I ate all week and the rabbit with spatzele was excellent. I thought the wine list was eclectic and well priced. The service was perfect…prompt, friendly and with no pretension whatsoever. I really had a great time here.

Lunch yesterday was at Peche which was highly recommended and part of Donald Link’s empire. I started with a tuna crudo dish that was outstanding and then shared a few oysters. The Island Creeks from Massachusetts were great, but the local Louisiana oysters were fat and muddy. Not my style. I had a shrimp roll that was okay…too much mayo. The beets, brussel sprouts and beans with bacon side dishes were great. All in all I liked Peche, but it was my least favorite non-work meal of the trip.

We had a work dinner at Arnauds on Wednesday evening…let’s just say that feeding sixty people at the same time proved troublesome and I didn’t love this meal.

You had the same meal at La Petite Grocery as me when I was there last month. Sandy had the bolognese with a deep fried egg on top. Also excellent as were the profiteroles for dessert.

Casamento’s starts their summer vacation tomorrow, if you’re still there today head over early and get an oyster loaf.
