Well, whilst searching for goodies for the thread about finding an introduction to aged Cali cabs, I came across a 3L of 1984 Bouchaine “J.E. Luper” Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.
It was an impulse buy.
I can’t find much of anything about it on the interweb tubes.
If anyone has a link, tasting impression, or feels inclined to edumacate me about this wine, I would be appreciative.
I don’t know what hit me, damned auction fever.
3L? That’s a lot of wine. You’ll need help.
When Jerry Luper was the winemaker at Bouchaine, he made and sold wine, mostly by mailing list, under his own eponymous label for three vintages '82-'84. He was also winemaker at Freemark Abbey, Chateau Montelena, and Diamond Creek, to name but a few of his stops on the way to Portugal(?). The Luper Cabernets were pretty good and fairly in demand at the time. Haven’t opened a bottle in years, although I still have some laying around somewhere. I’m sure TomHill knows more detail.
'84 was the best of the three.
If you happen to be in the neighborhood!
I expect a short cellar life for this one.
