Need recommendations for California wine tasting tonight

Hi

I just got a last minute invitation to a wine tasting tonight, it looks like all of the wineries that will be present are from California.

Most of these I never heard of so am looking for recommendations of what to definitely check out. I usually gravitate towards pinot noir and cab sav but am open to trying anything that is good.

Here are a list of the wineries that will be pouring:

The Mascot
Sonoma Cutrer
Scribner Vinyards
ZD WInes
Rombauer
Duckhorn
Far Niente Rutherford Ranch Papapietro Perry
Merry Edwards
Freemark Abbey

Treasurey Estate
Daou
AXR
Martin Ray
Boich Family Cellars
Vitnus Wines
William Cole
Silver Oak
Klipptones
Cine COnnections
Flora Springs
Cabana
Jackson Family Vinyard BrandsFolio WInes

Would be interested to see what the following suppliers are pouring.
Duckhorn - Could be pouring Kosta Browne
Jackson Family Wines - Could be pouring Brewer Clifton.
Vintus - I assume they will pour Montelena.

For Cabernet
The Mascot
Far Niente
Freemark Abbey
Daou
Silver Oak
Groth
Treasury (BV? Penfolds Cali project?)

For Pinot
Merry Edwards
Flowers

Should be a fun event!

I like Champ Deutz tossed in the middle of a CA tasting

The Mascot
Merry Edwards Pinot (also their awesome sauv blanc if they’re pouring it)
Duckhorn if they’re pouring 3 Palms merlot
Silver Oak
Groth
ZD - haven’t had it in years but remember liking their wines

If it’s the Abacus from ZD wines, then you need to jump all over that one. Mascot is always a good choice too. Rombauer is “meh”. Groth makes a good every day type cab. Daou has some decent cheaper ones, but I’ve never had any of their “flagship” cabs. Again, if it’s Abacus, then you have to try that one.

+1 on the Merry Edwards. I would also try the Silver Oak and Groth Cabernets. Those are the ones that I have tried recently and enjoyed.

Tidbit of history -

Maision Deutz planted what is now Laeticia in Arroyo Grande, CA. They sold it in 1997 but they are still known for their sparkling wines…

Cheers

Can’t speak for the Cab, but for Pinot I would recommend Freeman, Flowers, and Merry Edwards.

Mascot, Groth, and Merry Edwards would be the must hits for me on that list. if Treasury is pouring Etude or high end Beringer go for it. Freemark and Silver Oak worth a taste since you’re there.

ZD didn’t have Abacus, Mascot had a Cab from some newer Harlan vines

Yes, Vintus poured Montelena however Duckhorn didn’t have Kosta Brown and Jackson didn’t have Brewer Clifton.

Did you try the Black Kite? I used to drink their stuff all the time but stopped for some unknown reason. Haven’t had it in years.
