Visiting friends in Discovery Bay mid week. We will travel with them to Napa for 1 day on Thursday. They visit there often and know where they want to take us for tastings. I want to suggest one winery for us to try. What would your ONE suggestion be. We like reds (cab., syrah, pinot, yes even zin.). TIA
Paul - I would suggest Larkmead in Calistoga. Very nice Cabs/Cab blends plus a little Sauv Blanc. You do need an appt.
You won’t find much Pinot in Napa or actually much Syrah.
If you want something unique, get an appt at Outpost Winery on top of Howell Mtn. Great Zin, Petite Sirah and Cab plus terrific views.
Disclaimer: I used to work at Outpost Winery.
I would suggest Nickel & Nickel. They would have all the wines for sampling you mentioned, plus, they have one of the prettiest wineries I’ve seen in Napa. Stunning grounds along with the Tasting Room they place you in afterwards. It’s a really memorable experience.
Either that, or Pride. It’s a hike, but well worth the visit. You would need an appt for either.
I’d suggest Pride long before Nickel & Nickel. I think their wines are stronger by far, offer more value, and the views are simply amazing. Nickel and Nickel have spent a ton of money on the winery, their restored buildings and the grounds. It’s a nice tour. A great example of a high-end boutique style winery catering to tourists and steak houses. Pride is better example of a Boutique winery catering to wine lovers.
