I need someone to teach me how to filter out any email that says “your allocation is now available” and send it straight to junk. I’ve now said, “that’s the last one I buy this year” about 5 times. I’ve been good not buying from wine shops that send out their daily blasts on wine that can be bought fairly readily, but it has been difficult (ok, impossible) to say no to new projects and/or lists that I’ve waited to get on for awhile.

How do others deal with knowing there will be new “can’t miss” projects in the future and buying habits today? Or am I just going to end up with a cellar of inaugural wines? Part of the fun wine provides me is the thrill of trying something new, so the “buy what you like” thing doesn’t seem to apply. But at some point I’ll have to make a decision on what does and doesn’t make the cut.

Just have an auto-forward to your partner’s email. That should ensure nothing gets bought.

I’m on no winery mailing lists (little sense to it in the UK), and for online wine merchants I tend to only buy when I decide I want something, so any regular comms are likely to be noted and ignored.

The best method of restricting buying for me, is setting a constrained storage limit. If there is no space I can’t buy anything (I don’t do offsite storage or EP).

Did not think of forwarding them to my wife - that’s funny. It may be more practical than expected though, she may be a decent filter for me. “You keep babbling about this one” and “I’ve never heard of this one” may actually be better than flipping a coin.

Storage is a problem - new cellar, plenty of holes.

I develop a buying plan that extends forward several months and leaves only a small budget for spontaneous purchases on a monthly basis. I also chart out when to expect the few mailing lists I am on, and always consider the varieties I buy on those lists in reference to anything new I might consider.

Funny Lori and I recently had this conversation:

“How many wine clubs do we belong to now?”

“None.”

“But how many mailing list offers do you get?”

“You mean, per day?” :stuck_out_tongue:

Maybe if she knew how many of these I delete, she’d actually see my ridiculous wine buying strategy as a form of admirable restraint. [thumbs-up.gif]

Apologies, it’s En-primeur. Buying wines up front (in bond) for delivery later to bonded storage or to home with duty/vat taken at that point.
