Just opened the 2015 cogno elena which is 100% Nebbiolo rose. I’m a huge fan of red fruited burgundy and Barolo. It’s good but I think there’s a reason this different grape has mostly gone away. It’s not as complex even though it has a nice red taste. I went straight from the bottle and then a major decant. Don’t get me wrong; it’s really good but not to me worth it.
As a fellow red-fruited Barolo lover who’s tried the 10/13/14/15 of this wine recently (including the 14 and 15 side-by-side), I would personally chalk your experience up to vintage more so than varietal. The 14 has stunning aromatics and is very complex. A really beautiful wine. The 15 I didn’t love, I found it a little candied and simple like I have some other 15s. VE is usually an automatic half-case purchase for me (especially at € prices, which can be much less than the US) and I assume the 16 will be no different. But I decided to pass on buying any 15 for the cellar.
For those that may be interested, apparently Ian D’Agata devoted an entire chapter in his new Barolo book to Nebbiolo rose. I haven’t read it yet but plan to order a copy. This was from a review of the book on wine-searcher.com:
The author’s chapter on Nebbiolo Rosé runs just over 22 pages and must surely be the most complete study of this varietal; for the author the wines made from Nebbiolo Rosé offer “charming and enchanting aromatics” along with notes of “nutmeg, cumin and cinnamon”. D’Agata’s writing here is both complex and captivating, and this is one of the best chapters in the book.
