I quite like Salt Vine (at least at BD prices)
L’Envolee 2019 was fantastic
Respectfully disagree on salt vine. I found it to be overly sweet and pretty similar to many Napa Cabs. Not the most distinct or singular. At the BD price it’s ok but I can’t imagine paying full for it.
Agreed. My favorite “Napa” wines - Mount Eden and Ridge - come from the Santa Cruz Mountains.
But, I also like Chateau Montelena, Mayacamas and Stony Hill.
Here are a few that come to mind: Realm, Jones Family, Ovid and Greer.
One that I would have put on in the past was Seavey as they were older school and built to last. Has anybody had one lately?
Under $200 but i like Roy Piper and think it punches above its weight class.
I forgot about roy piper. Good one as well!
A few of my “worth its” have already been mentioned but I’ll add Memento Mori, Carter, and yes, Schrader.
Perrarus? I’ll see myself out…
Pretty much everything I’d recommend that is worth it, to me, has been mentioned. Roy Piper, W&M, RM, etc. I need to be quicker on pulling the trigger with Pott but am usually too slow - it’s sells fast. I’m interested in adding Greer and Detert, but Napa isn’t my only interest and must allocate accordingly. I’d love to be a buyer of MacDonald, maybe someday…
Probably my WOTY last year.
I would add Chiron, Smith-Madrone.
BTW, this is not price capped. If there is something out there that is headspinning good at $400, I’m interested to hear!
Abreu and Eisele are great but all are 400 plus now. Altagracia for eisele is good since its at 140
Abreu is in my top 2 Napa wines (with Harlan). I adore the wines, and do buy them.
Nice. I love bryant as well but cant buy their top bottlings anymore. Too expensive. I would look at Vice Versa. Expensive at 300, but great quality imo.
This thread made me open a 2015 Greer tonite at dinner (worth it). It also made me buy a couple bottles of 2019 Detert East Block retail at basically mailing list price. Thanks for enabling!
Detert is so good as well. Especially with age!
Ian, you are probably familiar with these, but: Robert Craig Robert’s block, and the Turnbull SV’s and Black Label can be really good….age them a few years.
Lots of great ones covered . One that has not been mentioned that I believe is differentiated is Kongsgaard Syrah. Of course they are known for the Judge Chard, but the Syrah is beautiful and memory-making in good years.
Surprised no one mentioned Kinsman Eades yet. Along with Realm and Maybach, these three are the lists I haven’t dropped off of. Along with Christopher Tynan’s Judge vineyard Syrah, although not from Napa.
Napa Wines that are “Worth it”
Charles Krug Cabernet Sauvignon
Frog’s Leap Cabernet Sauvignon
Louis Martini Cabernet Sauvignon
I’m not including any wines not made from Cabernet Sauvignon, although that’s where most of the values are.
